Tinubu’s Southern Defensive And Offensive Muscles Crack, Exactly Four Months To 2027 Election

OpenLife News states, in this editorial 2027 election review, that President Bola Tinubu has every reason to be deeply worried over the cracks that have emerged in his southern campaign muscles.

Happening exactly a month to the 2027 presidential election, fixed for January 16, 2027, the public spat between Governor Hope Uzodinma and Federal Capital Territory, FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike is no longer a war to be ignored as a result of impending consequences.

It is a fight for the soul of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election machinery.

Clearly, the two represent  different types of muscles in the Tinubu’s political team.

For one, Wike is Tinubu’s offensive muscle who delivers votes  outside APC circle especially where APC governors are not his match in the South-South controlled People’s Democratic Party, PDP enclaves. He also has  opposition-splitting capacity and serves as a weapon against Atiku.

Uzodinma, on the other hand, is Tinubu’s defensive muscle and APC internal  guardian.

He controls the Progressive Governors Forum – the engine room of the APC.

He is also Tinubu’s shield against anti-party activities and internal sabotage and protects party orthodoxy, ensures governors don’t fund opposition, and guarantees that APC structure stays loyal down-ballot (Governorship, Senate, House).

Curiously,  Uzodinma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum,  has just announced that APC Governors will not support any alliance that undermines Tinubu.

On the other is Wike, who is building a Rainbow Coalition — a cross-party political platform to mobilize non-APC votes for Tinubu in 2027.

Wike’s counter-punch is devastating: That Uzodinma is a governor who could not deliver 15 percent votes for Tinubu in 2023 and therefore lacks the moral standing to dictate who is loyal and who is not.

This fight exposes three deep contradictions in Tinubu’s camp:

1. The Battle For Who Owns Tinubu’s 2027 Structure

Tinubu has two power blocs fighting to be his chief strategist.

However, Uzodinma’s Bloc, the core APC bloc) believes loyalty must be exclusive. Only card-carrying APC structures should drive the 2027 campaign.

Any external platform like Rainbow Coalition, in their over view, is a Trojan horse that will create divided loyalty and weaken APC candidates down the ballot.

Wike’s Bloc, which can be described as the expansionist bloc believes Tinubu cannot win 2027 with APC votes alone. He needs PDP, Labour and APGA votes. Wike’s Rainbow Coalition is designed to be the vehicle for that — a platform for politicians who love Tinubu but hate APC.

Uzodinma’s statement that “commitment is exclusively to APC candidates”_ is a direct shot at legitimizing Wike’s Rainbow Coalition as an official APC campaign vehicle.

Not letting any chance, Wike deploys capacity tool and his attack on Uzodinma’s 2023 electoral performance is factual and politically lethal.

In the 2023 presidential election, APC scored poorly in the Southeast, including Imo.

Labour Party’s Peter Obi dominated the region. Data from INEC shows APC got less than 20% in Imo. Wike, on the other hand, delivered Rivers State to Tinubu despite being in PDP, a feat Tinubu has publicly praised.

So when Wike says Uzodinma cannot deliver 15%, he is reminding Tinubu that the governors shouting loyalty could not deliver their states, while he, an outsider, delivered.

This puts Tinubu in a dilemma.

If he sides with Uzodinma, he alienates his most effective vote-getter outside APC. If he sides with Wike, he angers his governors who control state party structures.

Consequences For Tinubu In 2027

This fight has  direct consequences for President Tinubu:

Divided Campaign Architecture  Tinubu now risks running two parallel campaigns that will fight each other — the official APC Governors Forum campaign and Wike’s Rainbow Coalition. This is how Jonathan lost in 2015.

Weakened Southeast and South-South Strategy

Tinubu needs both regions. Uzodinma is his highest-ranking political leader in the Southeast, Wike is his strongest muscle in the South-South. If they fight, both regions become vulnerable to Atiku and Obi in 2027.

Emboldened Opposition

The PDP 2027 candidates are watching. A crack between Wike and Uzodinma means the PDP can argue that even Tinubu’s own camp does not trust him to win with APC alone. It gives Atiku and Peter Obi talking points that the APC is fractured.

The Money and Structure War

Rainbow Coalition will need funding and logistics. APC governors control state funds and party structures.

If Uzodinma successfully rallies governors to boycott Rainbow, Wike’s coalition will be starved of grassroots support and become an Abuja media project.

Also, Wike delivered Rivers and helped split PDP votes in 2023. If Wike feels humiliated by Uzodinma’s communique, he can quietly pull back. Tinubu has no replacement for Wike in the South-South.

South-East and South-South Will Be Lost

Tinubu needs to improve his 2023 numbers in both zones. Uzodinma is his face in the South-East, Wike is his face in the South-South. If both men are fighting publicly, voters in both zones will see Tinubu’s camp as chaotic and stay with Obi and PDP.

Tinubu Will Be Forced To Choose
President Tinubu cannot keep both as equal muscles anymore. He must either:
– Call them to order and define roles clearly: Uzodinma for APC core votes, Wike for opposition harvesting. Or pick one side and lose the value the other brings.

If he delays, the fight will spread to other APC governors vs Wike loyalists.

The Bottom Line

Hope Uzodinma is speaking as a party loyalist protecting the APC brand. Nyesom Wike is speaking as a political contractor who believes he is too big to be confined by party loyalty.

For President Tinubu, this is not just a fight between two strong men in his camp.

Management

It is a fight between party orthodoxy and political pragmatism. Managing it poorly could cost him the 2027 election. Managing it well — by clearly defining roles: Uzodinma for core APC consolidation, Wike for opposition vote harvesting — could give him the winning formula.

For now, the war has just started.
