Imo 2027 battle unsettles Tinubu's game plan
OpenLife News reports that the 2027 political battle in Imo State is taking a new turn as the emergence of the Rainbow Coalition is unsettling President Bola Tinubu’s re-election game plan and threatening the All Progressives Congress (APC) hold on the state.
The tension became public on Tuesday when Governor Hope Uzodimma, during the inauguration of the Imo chapter of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement in Owerri, warned APC members against working with outside coalitions.
“There is no rainbow coalition in Imo State,” Uzodimma declared, cautioning members of the pro-Tinubu movement to stay within the ruling party.
The statement drew a swift response from the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who said the Rainbow Coalition is the vehicle that will end APC control in Imo in 2027.
In a statement by his media adviser, Ikenna Onuoha, Anyanwu said the alignment between PDP and the Rainbow Coalition is the only way to unseat the APC.
“The APC in Imo State and its leaders are afraid of PDP and the Rainbow Coalition. Their statement during the unveiling of the Door-to-Door initiative on Tuesday in Owerri that Rainbow coalition has no basis in the state is a testament that the party and its drivers are frustrated and confused,” Anyanwu said.
He described the APC in Imo as a party that has been rejected by the people, likening it to “Ebola disease that has no cure even after being quarantined.”
Anyanwu also accused the Uzodimma administration of failing to fix rural roads, equip hospitals, revive the economy, improve education standards and resolve the three-month strike by lecturers of Imo State University (IMSU).
“Imo people are weary of the 3R government and their tricks. It is embarrassing that instead of the administration in the state to apologize to Imo people for failing abysmally, the administration is busy insulting and provoking Imo people,” he said.
Political observers say the Rainbow Coalition fight is no longer just an Imo governorship affair, but is energizing other opposition forces in a way that could hurt both President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid and the APC’s governorship candidate in Imo.
Uniting PDP, Labour Party and ADC structures
The Rainbow Coalition has become a rallying point for aggrieved PDP, Labour Party, ADC and other smaller party members who lost out in 2023, creating a united grassroots network that the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement will struggle to match.
Weakening APC’s Southeast mobilisation base
Imo is the only APC-controlled state in the Southeast. If the coalition narrative of APC as a rejected party gains traction, it demoralises APC foot soldiers expected to deliver Southeast votes for Tinubu’s re-election.
Turning infrastructure failures into campaign weapons
Issues like IMSU strike, rural roads decay and hospital neglect raised by Anyanwu are being adopted by other opposition parties as talking points to attack the APC brand at both state and federal levels.
Shifting the 2027 governorship math
In the November 11, 2023 election, Uzodimma polled 540,308 votes to defeat Anyanwu who scored 71,503 votes, winning all 27 LGAs. The coalition aims to prevent a repeat of that sweep by pooling votes that were previously split among opposition candidates.
Creating likely casualties
President Tinubu’s Door-to-Door Movement risks being seen as ineffective in Imo if APC members secretly align with the coalition.
APC governorship candidate to succeed Uzodimma will inherit the anti-APC sentiment and face a united opposition.
Governor Uzodimma’s political structure may suffer internal cracks as members hedge between loyalty to the party and survival via coalition talks.
Anyanwu urged the APC government to acknowledge what he called the desire of Imo people for an alternative through the PDP and Rainbow Coalition ahead of 2027.
