RCCG Banishes Illiteracy Through Spiritual, Financial, Physical And Intellectual Leanings

OpenLife Nigeria reports that the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has initiated a “Kick Illiteracy Out of Lagos State Campaign,” aimed at banishing spiritual, financial, physical and intellectual illiteracy from the Nigerian system, beginning with Lagos State.
Briefing the press in Lagos on Monday, May 16, as prelude to the commemoration of the programme 2nd anniversary coming up in June 2022, at the Lekki Adult Literacy and Vocational Centre, with the theme: Kick Illiteracy Out Of Lagos State Campaign,” Mrs Chika Idallison who is the administrator and lead facilitator, noted that the reason for the establishment of the Lekki advocacy centre was borne out of the desire to promote the well being of the people physically, spiritually and other ramifications especially in the area of education.
Joe Mbulu, Coordinator and Trustee, Lekki Adult Literacy and Vocational Centre, took the audience down memory lane and explained the need for Adult Literacy Centre in Lekki which, according to him, was borne out of share passion to minimise the level of illiteracy within their catchment area.
He stated that the centre started with two facilitators but has grown over the years to around 70 facilitators.
Further, Mbulu stated categorically that the centre is not for profit making but rather impacting life, giving life a meaning and value by nurturing learners who will grow spiritually, financially, physically and intellectually. He stated that positive reinforcements have been put in place to encourage learning, with incentives like birthday celebrations, empowerment programs for the needy among them when the need arises and award presentations for best performing students.
He told the audience that they are free to visit the centre every Saturday to experience what they do and also support the program in their own way, adding that there is room for partnership with NGOs who share similar vision.
“Learners who are mature in age and do not want to further their education have vocational programmess lined up for them. Those who are interested in furthering their education also have scholarship programmes lined up but there is room for support,” he said.
On his part, the Provincial Pastor of RCCG, Christ The Lord Centre Parish, LP 20, Pastor Tunde Netufo, narrated the birth of Adult Literacy Centre (LACL) which he said is a practical demonstration of a component of the RCCG CTL, which seeks to bring the gospel to life through works of righteousness, such as developing them physically, spiritually, financial and intellectually and also to bridge the gap between the literate and illiterate within the Lekki Phase 1 community.
He however stressed part of the challenges they encountered when they were about setting up the centre, one of which was getting an approval from the state government.
“But when they made the state agency understand that this is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR which is in line with the mandate of our General Overseer, they gave us all the support needed, also in terms of finance, it has been sheer will, from the trustees to well meaning individuals,” he divulged.
Responding to questions, Mrs Idallison explained that the Centre has prospects for expansion and extending it beyond Lekki.
She stressed that the Centre presently has 125 learners, saying that in terms of financial challenge, God and well meaning individuals within the church have been the source of supports.
She noted that learners are not limited to RCCG alone. “We have Muslims in our midst. You can see some of the women with hijab in the photo,” she clarified.
