Charles Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has been declared the winner of the Anambra State governorship election.
Florence Obi, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s returning officer in the election and vice-chancellor of the University of Calabar, announced the final result on Wednesday morning, following the supplementary election held in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
The tightly contested election exercise was declared inconclusive on Sunday due to massive violence in Ihiala.
Despite heavy security presence, the election failed to hold at all 14 polling units in Orsumoghu Ward, Ihiala Local Government Area.
Nafiu Mohammed, the collation officer for Ihiala, told Obi that policemen were locked in a gun battle with gunmen for hours, preventing the exercise in its entirety.
However, after adding the supplementary election votes to the initial numbers, Soludo got a total of 112,229 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 53,807 votes.
The election victory marks another great stride for Soludo, a former governor of Nigeria’s central bank.
