BREAKING ANALYSIS: Dickson vs Tompolo - Who wins Ijaw 2027?
OpenLife News reports that the battle for the Ijaw and Niger Delta votes in the 2027 elections, especially at the presidential level, is not just Bayelsa versus Delta States, the haven of the Ijaws but a proxy war for the soul of the Niger Delta between two Ijaw power blocs involving Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.
This is not a personal fight. It is ideological, structural and generational.
The real 2027 Ijaw presidential election is not APC vs NDC. It is a census. A class census.
Who are more in Ijaw nation today? Is the Scholar Ijaw made up of the Dickson’s camp or the Creek Economy Ijaw, made up of Tompolo’s camp?
This is the Ijaw that Dickson created and represents.
It is made up of products of Alamieyeseigha and Dickson’s free education, law school scholarships, and civil service expansion (2012-2020).
They are Lawyers, Lecturers at Niger Delta University, Doctors, Anglican and Catholic Priests, CAN leaders, retired Permanent Secretaries, INC intellectuals like Prof. Benjamin Okaba including second generation diaspora Ijaw in Yenagoa, Warri, PH, Lagos who read Arise TV and debate on Twitter/X.
Their economic strength derives from salary, pension, consultancy, NGO grants, church tithes. They are not dependent on federal pipeline money. They are independent of the creek.
This group has a population of roughly 35-40% of active Ijaw electorate and are dominant in Bayelsa West (Sagbama, Ekeremor), Yenagoa capital, Opobo/Nkoro, Patani.
They value ideology over stomach infrastructure.
They want restructuring, true federalism, resource control. A President who can debate restructuring and build Agge Seaport on policy, not patronage would be their choice.
They see Tompolo’s Tantita contract as “settlement culture” that mortgaged Ijaw struggle for personal contract.
This is why Dickson can introduce Peter Obi – an Igbo trader with a “New Nigeria” message – in Toru-Orua and get cheers.
For Scholar Ijaw, Obi represents competence, statistics, and anti-corruption. Dickson told them: “APC has nothing to offer Bayelsa, no roads, no bridges.”
That message resonates with a professor who drives from Amassoma to Yenagoa on a bad road every day.
They control the narrative. They control IYC intellectual wing, the media, the pulpit. They can make Tinubu unpopular on radio in 3 days.
Their Weakness: They don’t control the boats that carry ballot boxes in the creeks.
Ijaw people control decisive votes in 5 states as follows:
Bayelsa (all 8 Local Government Areas)
Delta (Bomadi, Burutu, Patani, Warri North, Warri South-West)
Rivers (Bonny, Okrika, Kalabari, Opobo)
Ondo (Ese-Odo)
Edo (Ovia, Etsako riverine)
In these areas, there are about 2.8m registered voters.
In a close presidential election, whoever carries 70% of this bloc can swing the South-South.
The Dickson Camp – The Ideological Opposition
Senator Seriake Dickson, former Governor of Bayelsa (2012-2020), Senator Bayelsa West, now National Leader of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) obviously holds the ac as the forward man in the ideological opposition.
Overtime, he has described himself as the obstacle to APC since 2015.
As NDC national leader with a presidential candidate to deliver, Dickson has a lot in his hands.
Dickson has declared that Peter Obi will win Bayelsa, Niger Delta and Nigeria.
To that effect, he has formally introduced Obi as NDC presidential candidate in a well attended rally in Bayelsa.
In the Dickson’s ideological group is the old PDP political family, loyalists of Goodluck Jonathan, Ijaw National Council, INC intellectuals and Anglican/Ijaw elite in Sagbama, Ekeremor, Yenagoa.
But pushing differently to demonstrate both ideological and creek influences, Dickson, while showcasing Obi to the Ijaws displayed canoe and cultural legitimacy.
He used Ijaw boat regatta to mobilize, presenting himself as custodian of Ijaw heritage. Expressing grievance about the developing politics within Ijaw, Dickson announced angrily how Diri surrendered Bayelsa to APC free of charge.
He undressed APC as a party with nothing to offer Bayelsa and Ijaws.
His promises and message to the Ijaw when NDC wins included:
1. Restructuring, resource control, Agge Deep Seaport – Dickson promised Obi will execute Agge Seaport if elected.
2. Anti-incumbency: APC neglect, no roads, no bridges, hardship will be addressed frontally.
3. Identity: “Bayelsa is NDC and NDC is Bayelsa. You cannot sell our state.”
His strength is deep roots in Bayelsa West, control of traditional structures in Toru-Orua, moral high ground as opposition, youth appeal through Obi’s movement.
No state power. Diri, his former Principal Secretary whom he funded and made Governor, now controls state machinery, civil service, and has defected to APC. Dickson admits he has not been in Bayelsa since late Ewhrudjakpo funeral.
Dickson versus Tompolo: The Scholar Ijaw vs Creek Economy Ijaw –
The Creek Economy Ijaw (Tompolo’s Army)
This is the Ijaw that Tompolo saved, armed, and now employs.
They are products of Kaiama Declaration 1998, MEND 2005-2009, and the Amnesty 2009 to Tantita 2022 pipeline.
These are the former MEND commanders, ex-agitators (Generals, Captains)Tantita surveillance operatives – over 17,000 registered youths across 5 states.
They are Amnesty beneficiaries (65,000+ on N65,000 monthly stipend), Illegal bunkering boys now turned legal contractors, speedboat drivers, women in fish processing cooperatives funded by Tantita empowerment, traditional rulers in riverine communities whose monthly upkeep now comes from Tantita, not state allocation
Their economy is directly tied to who is President in Abuja. Their economy is “security economy.”
If Tinubu wins, contract continues, amnesty continues, 20k jobs continue.
If Tinubu loses, contract is reviewed, new President may give it to another ethnic group.

Their population is roughly 60-65% of active Ijaw electorate and absolutely dominant in 70% of geographical Ijaw landmass including Southern Ijaw, Burutu, Bomadi, Brass, Ogbia riverine, Warri South-West, Ese-Odo.
They don’t vote for ideology. They vote for survival. As one Bomadi youth leader said: “Grammar no dey pay school fees.”
They see Dickson’s scholar politics as “too much English with no money,” Tompolo speaks their language: “Hunt as a pack”. Sandra Booth of Australian police used same language when she allied with NDLEA – Tompolo’s network understands that logic.
For instance, Tompolo’s PBAT Door-to-Door Movement with 200+ vehicles is not a campaign – it is a payroll.
Each coordinator gets N100k monthly to mobilize 10 houses.
That is how you win in the creeks where there is no network.
They control the physical territory and the means of delivering votes.
In 2023, Southern Ijaw alone had 165,000 votes but only 40% were collated before midnight because of riverine logistics. Whoever controls boats controls results.
They are highly transactional. If Federal allocation for Tantita delays by 2 months, loyalty shifts.
And they are hated by urban youth who see them as “billionaires who forgot the struggle.”
The deciding ratio would be 40-60 depending on the season. The season will technically shape how it will play out on January 16, 2027.
If election is in rain season Creek Economy Ijaw turnout will be 75-80% while Scholar Ijaw turnout will be 55% because most scholars may not risk life in flooded areas.
There is a third group emerging: 18-27 year old Ijaw youth. They have NDU degree (Scholar) but no job, so they are doing Tantita surveillance (Creek).
They are 25% of the voter roll. They follow Tompolo for money, but follow Dickson/Obi on Instagram for hope.
That hybrid youth will be the deciding factor. Whoever wins them in Southern Ijaw, Burutu, and Warri South-West wins Ijaw.
Current Intelligence: Tompolo is winning them with cash and boats. Dickson is winning them with Obi’s message and war canoe festival.
Right now, cash is winning.
Ijaw in 2027 is not voting for a president. It is voting for which economic model should survive.
