OpenLife Nigeria reports that Nigerian singer Portable has addressed his recent defeat in a celebrity boxing match against Carter Efe, shifting the conversation from the outcome of the fight to what he describes as significant financial rewards tied to the event.
Speaking after the bout, which ended in a unanimous decision loss for him, Portable reflected on his involvement in the highly publicised showdown and the attention it generated across the entertainment and sports space.
He questioned the reception he has received since the event, suggesting that his participation in the growing celebrity boxing scene has not been fully appreciated by some in the industry. He said, “I brought celebrity boxing to Nigeria, and suddenly everybody in the industry turned against me?”.
Portable went on to outline the financial arrangements surrounding his appearance in the fight, explaining that his earnings were substantial even before stepping into the ring.
He stated, “I collected ₦40 million before I even entered the ring, plus ₦1 million per post to promote the show I did five posts, so that’s ₦45 million in total.”
The singer also made claims about the wider commercial success of the event, particularly in relation to betting activity. He added, “The betting company made $17 million just from people betting on me and Carter Efe. Most of that money came from people who bet on me.”
His comments have continued to generate discussion online, especially as they came shortly after his loss to Carter Efe, who controlled the fight and secured a clear win on the judges’ scorecards.
Despite the defeat in the ring, Portable’s remarks suggest he views the event through a financial and promotional lens, emphasizing earnings and exposure over the final sporting result.
The situation has further fueled conversations around the rising popularity of celebrity boxing in Nigeria and the commercial value attached to such entertainment-driven sporting events.
