Archbishop Martins Advocates Proper Sanitation

 

OpenLife News reports that the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged governments to promote policies that guarantee universal access to clean water, proper sanitation, and strict regulations on pollution and waste disposal.

Archbishop Martins made the call in his homily to mark the 2026 Season of Creation and the Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology.

Protect Water Sources And Act Responsibly

Speaking on the theme “Immersion in Living Water,” the Archbishop said the 2026 logo symbolizes renewal and new life.

“We must advocate for universal access to clean water and proper sanitation in our communities, homes, schools, health care facilities, churches, and mosques.”

He tasked governments, industries, farmers and local authorities to protect water sources and ensure responsible waste disposal, while denouncing pollution in all forms.

Food Security, Greening Projects And Biodiversity

Archbishop Martins also called on those in government to ensure everyone has access to safe, nourishing food and that the benefits of biodiversity are shared equitably.

“Churches and mosques and other stakeholders should support greening projects and help to encourage and equip communities to grow their own food.”

From Exploitation To Stewardship

Citing Laudato Si’ by the late Pope Francis, he said “the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are inseparable.”

“We must see a shift from mindless exploitation to care of the earth, and from short-term gain to long-term flourishing, thereby rethinking our values, economic systems, and priorities.”

He urged faith communities to provide environmental education that combines scientific knowledge with ethics and spiritual formation.

Season Of Creation: Sept 1 To Oct 4

The 2026 Season of Creation begins September 1, World Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends October 4, the Feast Day of St. Francis, marking 800 years since his death. The Jubilee Year runs from January 1, 2026 to January 2027.

Pope Leo XIV said St. Francis’ message of peace, humility and environmental care is relevant for today’s world, concluding: “Let us all become Living Waters of God’s Peace, refreshing our wounded world.”

“Respect your environment, hold yourself accountable for the sustenance of the earth, and be a true steward of creation,” Archbishop Martins added.
