Gospel singer Asu Ekiye says his 28-year marriage ended in 2025
OpenLife News reports that renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Asu Ekiye, has opened up on the end of his 28-year marriage to wife Kunemofa Asu, saying the decision to end the union was not his.
The singer, who married Kunemofa in 1998, announced in August 2026 that the marriage officially ended a year earlier in 2025. The couple share four children.
In a statement released to address public inquiries, Ekiye said he was compelled to offer clarification “respectfully and without any intention to cast aspersions on anyone.”
“The decision regarding the dissolution of my marriage was not one I initiated. My wife expressed her desire to end the marriage, packed out of my house and subsequently instituted divorce proceedings without any quarrels.”
According to the gospel minister, after she left, he spent about a year appealing for reconciliation.
“For about a year thereafter, I made every reasonable effort, and appealed to her in every way I could, hoping that we could reconsider and preserve the marriage. Unfortunately, those efforts did not yield the desired outcome, as she remained firm in her decision.”
Ekiye said after exhausting all options for reconciliation, he accepted the reality and allowed the divorce process to proceed.
“Having done all I could to seek reconciliation, I eventually came to the difficult decision to accept the reality of the situation and allow the divorce process to take its course.”
The singer stressed that he bears no bitterness and is choosing to move forward with dignity.
“I wish to make this clarification simply to set the record straight. I bear no bitterness or ill will toward anyone. After many years of shared experiences, I choose to approach this new chapter with grace, dignity, maturity and respect for all concerned.”
Asu Ekiye is a leading figure in Nigeria’s gospel music industry. Over the years he has released several worship songs and albums that have earned him a wide following across churches and gospel platforms in Nigeria and beyond.
He married Kunemofa in 1998, and the marriage lasted 28 years before ending in 2025.
