10 Things To Know About Mosquito Laboratories

OpenLife News reports that most people know mosquitoes as the tiny insects that bite, cause itching, and transmit malaria. Few think about the secure laboratories where scientists spend years studying them.

Behind those lab doors, mosquitoes are bred and studied to help tackle one of Africa’s biggest public health challenges. According to Dr. Alekos Simoni, Technical Support Specialist at Target Malaria, every discovery starts with understanding the mosquito itself — how it develops, behaves, and reproduces.

Ahead of World Mosquito Day, August 20, 2026, Dr. Simoni shares 10 things you probably didn’t know about mosquito laboratories.

1. Mosquitoes Have Their Own Nurseries

Every mosquito starts as an egg. In labs, scientists collect eggs and place them in controlled environments where they hatch into larvae, then adults. Every life stage is closely monitored to maintain healthy colonies for research.

2. Research Requires Remarkable Precision

Collecting mosquito eggs for experiments demands steady hands and patience. The eggs are incredibly delicate, and even slight mishandling can ruin them.

3. Timing Is Everything

For genetically modified mosquitoes, microinjection must happen within a narrow window after eggs are laid. Too early and embryos are too fragile. Too late and they’re too firm. Scientists literally race the clock.

4. Mosquitoes Are Studied Under Powerful Microscopes

Many procedures happen under high-powered microscopes. Specialised equipment allows researchers to examine embryos, larvae, and adults and observe details invisible to the naked eye.

5. Some Mosquitoes Glow Under Special Light

After successful genetic modification, scientists insert a fluorescent marker into the mosquito’s DNA. Under a special microscope, successfully modified larvae glow. This makes it easy to identify them quickly and accurately.

6. Most Mosquito Embryos Don’t Survive

Developing genetically modified mosquitoes is delicate work. Many embryos don’t survive the injection process. That’s why scientists constantly refine techniques while maintaining strict lab standards.

7. Temperature Can Make Or Break A Colony

Mosquitoes are very sensitive to their environment. Labs carefully control temperature, humidity, and light cycles. Even small changes can affect survival, growth, and behaviour.

8. Some Colonies Have Been Maintained For Years

Science takes time. Some mosquito colonies are kept across multiple generations. This allows researchers to study long-term biological traits and test potential innovations over time.

9. One Mosquito Can Lay Hundreds Of Eggs

A single female mosquito can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime. Understanding reproduction is key to malaria research because it shows how mosquito populations respond to different interventions.

10. Every Discovery Starts With Understanding The Mosquito

Before any new malaria tool is considered, scientists must first study mosquito biology and behaviour. All lab work is guided by evidence, rigorous testing, and responsible scientific practice.</p>

See It For Yourself

“For those curious to experience this work first-hand, Target Malaria: The Game is now available as a free mobile app for iOS and Android, and on desktop,” Dr. Simoni said.

“Players step into the role of a molecular biologist, using the same principles from real labs to perform microinjections and identify genetically modified larvae. The game was developed to make complex science more accessible and inspire greater understanding of malaria research.”

Players can also go “behind the scenes” inside a virtual mosquito laboratory to see the expertise and care involved.
