Zenith Bank, Nigeria's leading bank in digital, customers' care and corporate governance
OpenLife News reports that Zenith Bank Plc has reassured customers that their deposits remain safe and secure following a recent attempt to breach its systems, which the bank said was “nipped in the bud.”
The bank said its cybersecurity infrastructure detected and blocked the attack before any damage was done.
Working closely with regulators, law enforcement and international cybersecurity partners to investigate the hacking attempts and strengthen its cybersecurity defences, the bank quickly alerted some customers and advised extra consciousness in the event of any unusual activities in their accounts.
The bank, through email, encouraged customers to contact the bank immediately through its dedicated official channels via verified customer care lines, official websites, mobile applications or branches should they suspect foul play or unusual account activity.
According to available information, the attempts by the hackers to access limited customer information, “including email addresses and phone numbers” form part of a broader global attack on organisations across different sectors.
The bank stressed that the attempt incident involved only limited customer information, adding that its banking services and digital channels remain secure and fully operational.
The bank said it is investigating the attempt attack, noting that its incident response protocols and other cybersecurity measures were immediately activated after the attempts was noticed.
“As a precaution, we encourage our customers to remain vigilant against exposing emails, text messages, or phone calls, and to never disclose their password, PIN, One-Time Password (OTP), or other security credentials to anyone,” the bank said.
Zenith Bank said it remains committed to protecting customers’ information and thanked them for their continued trust, adding that investigations into the attempted incident are ongoing.
It added that there was no loss of customer funds and no compromise of customer data.
“We want to assure all our customers that their deposits are safe.”
Operating one of the most robust cybersecurity frameworks in the industry and continuously invest in technology to protect customers and their assets, the bank said the incident underscores the increasing sophistication of cyber threats targeting financial institutions globally.
“While the attempt was unsuccessful, it serves as a reminder that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” Zenith Bank stated.
“We urge customers to remain vigilant, protect their login details, and report any suspicious activity immediately.”
Industry analysts say Nigerian banks have ramped up investments in cybersecurity following a rise in phishing, ransomware and fraud attempts across the sector in 2025 and 2026.
Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s tier-1 banks, said it will continue to strengthen its systems and conduct regular security audits to ensure customer confidence.
“We remain committed to providing secure, reliable and innovative banking services to all our customers,” the bank added.
