The Only Path To Success In Entertainment—Paul Play Dairo

The Only Path To Success In Entertainment

OpenLife Nigeria, reproduces, a piece by leading Nigerian musician, singer and songwriter, Paul Play Dairo, which appears the final secret to success in the entertainment industry

When myself and late OJB used to dream dreams about getting to the top, I would take a bus to his house in Gbaja, Surulere and we will bring out tapes of Jodeci, Johnny Gill, R Kelly , Boys 2 Men.
We will lock ourselves in one of the classes in his sister’s school just by the house and be screaming our heads off trying to emulate these idols .
His mum will call out for him and we will quickly hide the tape and act like we doing something else .
His mum doesn’t want to see us trying to hurt our throats.
Music was like plague for their generation .

We were just caught up by this fire inside us or was it light that we felt the world needed to see .
We worked , we produced songs and wrote for people and I remember Klass studio in Ojuelegba .
That was our base . I don’t want to digress too much. Let me get back to my point .
While we struggle to get to the top we met along the way fantastic singers , rappers and producers that actually got us thinking twice about this journey we were about to embark on .
We would talk about them, how good they were and how we could be better than them .
At one point, we gave up because we felt there was no way we could be better than these guys .
They’re just too good . We felt they were going to make it before us .
We could bet our lives that these guys would be Megastars but today I am sitting up in my room and thinking about these guys and I’m humbled because they never made it . This is not to say they’re not doing it but they never got big .
I said to myself , “ We made it to the top not because we are better than them but because of the grace of God upon us.
I respect talented people , I love talented people . From what I see out there today , all I just see is more grace and less talent.
Peace.
