Senate President, Ahmed Lawan Faces Impeachment

Senate President to go
OpenLife Nigeria reports that Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, Senator representing Yobe North Constituency of Yobe State under the All Progressives Congress, APC will be impeached soon.
The impeachment call is coming on the heels of his statement condemning the Asaba Accord where 17 southern governors put a ban on open grazing by herdsmen.
On May 11, 17 governors from the Southern part of the country under the aegis of Southern Nigeria Governors Forum met in Asaba, Delta State, with insecurity and secession among issues forming the focal points.
In a resolution after the meeting, the forum explained rationale for the ban on open grazing, stressing that, “development and population growth has put pressure on available land and increased the prospects of conflict between migrating herders and local populations in the South. Given this scenario, it becomes imperative to enforce the ban on open grazing in the South, including cattle movement to the South by foot.”

On the strength of this resolution, Senate President Ahmad Lawan cautioned the states governors and other elected leaders against joining the agitations for secession or restructuring of the country.
Lawan, who stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja during Sallah celebration, said he was not against those calling for restructuring but elected officials must not be among those advocating for such calls.
The senate president further said state governors must ensure that they restructure their respective states first before calling for restructuring at the federal level.
“The call for secession or the call for restructuring – many are genuine calls – even though I never believe that someone who is calling for secession means well or is a misguided person,” he said.
“But I believe that when somebody calls for improving the structure that we have, it is a genuine call.
“But I want to advice here, I believe that as leaders those of us who were elected must not be at the forefront of calling for this kind of thing because even if you are a governor, you are supposed to be working hard in your state to ensure that this restructuring you are calling for at the federal level you have done it in your state as well.
“This is because while you may accuse the federal government of whatever it is, you may also be accused of the same thing in your state.
Reacting on Monday, Honourable Sergius Ogun of the House of Representatives called for the impeachment of the Senate President.
He argued that rather than dissipate energy on the impeachment of President Buhari as being canvassed by some law makers, Senator Lawan should be impeached.
He stated that the Senate President’s statement in the Presidential Villa during Eid-El-Fitri wherein he called on Sate governors to first restructure their respective states before calling on national restructuring is not statesmanlike.
He argued that the National Assembly has actually embarked on constitutional review to amend those sections of the constitution that seem inimical to Nigeria’s speedy economic growth.
But Ogun reckoned that with Lawan’s anti peoples position, those constitutional review efforts may be dead on arrival.
“The Senate President should be impeached. Something will happen this week,” Ogun disclosed.
