Reason Detained Nigerian Student, Aminu Adamu, Should ‘Suffer’ In Cell
OpenLife Nigeria reports that as most Nigerians are expressing concerns over the fate of a detained final year Environmental Management student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Aminu Adamu, fresh revelations indicate that many who had expressed such pity and concerns are withdrawing over his alleged past which centres on tribalism, religious intolerance and obtuse inhumanity.
Aminu Adamu has been languishing in detention after security officials comprising the police and men of the Department of State Service, arrested him over a post on Twitter alleging that the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, was feeding fat on poor people’s money.
The arrest has provoked reactions with the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS apologizing to Mrs Buhari and calling for forgiveness.
In like manner, the Executive Director, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said Aminu’s arrest showed the level of rot in Nigeria’s security system.
He said, “It is a very sad development. Whether it was the DSS or police that arrested the guy, it shows that the government has continued to deploy security assets to chase after gossip. They go to websites and social media in search of those gossiping about the President, his wife and his children, to arrest them.”
On his part, the Executive Director, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, Okechukwu Nwanguma, said the arrest violated the right of the student.
He said, RULAAC condemns the arrest and incommunicado detention of the citizen as being in violation of his democratic right to freedom of expression. If, however, the government believes that it has credible evidence against him to warrant his arrest, he should not be detained illegally.”
But viewed differently, 32 years old David Oluwaseun Hundeyin, a Nigerian investigative journalist, writer and activist feels Aminu Adamu should suffer more in cell as a result of his past display of inhuman tendencies.
According to David Oluwaseun Hundeyin, Aminu Adamu had, in May 2022, displayed the height of insensitivity to human life following the untimely death of Deborah Yakubu Samuel, a 200 level female Christian student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.
Deborah Yakubu Samuel was stoned to death and set ablaze for allegedly having an argument with fellow students online.
The Muslims among them claimed that she blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
Her death generated reactions across the country resulting into protests in some areas. Some of the protesters wore T shirts with Deborah’s inscription on it.
The protest against Deborah’s death was said to have infuriated Aminu Adamu who, on May 16, tweeted: “Duk wanda yasa wannan rigar ah Bauchi sai munchi uwarsa,” meaning “Anybody that wears the shirt in Bauchi will be death with.”
To David Oluwaseun Hundeyin, Aminu Adamu does not deserve any pity. He sees the final student as undeserving of any support at this trying period. He even apologized for his earlier campaign against the injustice of unfair arrest and detention saying “May he remain inside that cell as far as Deborak’s family is denied justice plus some extra time for accrued interest,” David Hundeyin said.
On the part of Olutoyosi Omotoso, a social media influencer and human rights activist, “I could never make this kind of error. Nobody needed to tell me he voted Buhari for a second term or he held the garments of Deborah’s stoners. I wish him love, light and Deborah’s fate. Oloriburuku.”
