Opposition Unity Against Tinubu Crashes

OpenLife News reports that the much-touted push by opposition parties to present a united front against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election has hit another brick wall, with personal ambition and distrust once again tearing the coalition apart before it takes off.

The uncertainty comes ahead of a summit convened for Monday, August 31, 2026 in Abuja by the G-100, a group led by former APC North-East Vice Chairman, Salihu Lukman. The meeting, themed ‘A Framework for Opposition Cooperation and Coordination,’ was meant to bring together leaders of the ADC, PDP, SDP, APM, PRP and NDC to agree on structures for working together.

But the central question — who steps down for whom — has already derailed the process.

Same Script, Different Parties

This is a repeat of the Ibadan accord of April 25, 2026, where 14 opposition parties including PDP, LP, NNPP, ADC and PRP met at the Agodi Government House and resolved to field a joint presidential candidate. That momentum collapsed within months.

Former VP Atiku Abubakar, who hosted IPAC in 2024 warning that Nigeria was sliding into a one-party state, is now the ADC presidential candidate with Rotimi Amaechi as running mate. Peter Obi left LP for NDC and emerged as its 2027 flag bearer, with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his VP. Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, host of the Ibadan meeting, also dumped PDP for APM and picked its ticket.

The four men who sat side by side in Ibadan are now leading separate parties into 2027.

Dead On Arrival — Wike

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed the entire exercise, calling the opposition “crippled and depleted” and saying 2027 will be “the easiest contest of Tinubu’s career.”

“To remove a government, you need a strong, vibrant opposition that has spent over four years planning, not one that is constantly looking for a party to join,” Wike said last week in Abuja. “If it is the 2027 election against Bola Tinubu, forget it. It is over.”

The G-100 insists the summit is not to pick a candidate yet, but to create a negotiation framework with five Working Groups. ADC has also said the door for coalition remains open.

Some of the 2027 presidential candidates

But with Accord, AAC and SDP pursuing a separate “democratic force” led by Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim and Omoyele Sowore, and Wike’s PDP faction pushing a “National Rainbow Coalition” for Tinubu, the opposition landscape is now split into at least three tracks.

The Hard Truth

Analysts say the same ghost that killed past alliances is back: competing ambitions. From UPGA in the First Republic to the failed ACN-CPC talks in 2011, Nigerian opposition coalitions have only succeeded once — the APC merger of 2013 that defeated Jonathan in 2015.

With 139 days to the January 16, 2027 presidential poll, the burden on Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso and Makinde is clear. Unless at least three of them agree to step aside for one candidate, the anti-Tinubu vote risks splitting again — a scenario risk firm SBM Intelligence warns could hand the APC victory despite current economic hardship.

For now, the summit may produce communiqués and committees. But without sacrifice at the top, “Opposition Unity Against Tinubu” has crashed again.

Nigerians are expected to file out on January 16, 2027 at the 176,846 official polling units in the 8,809 electoral wards located in the 774 local government areas across the 36 States and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to elect a new President.
