Cinema In Lekki Turns Bloody
OpenLife News reports that panic erupted at a cinema in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night after a machete-wielding man stormed the facility and attacked security personnel, leaving two people dead.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around peak hours and threw patrons and workers into confusion as people scampered for safety.
Sources said the suspect, who was armed with a machete and a knife, allegedly attempted to gain access into the cinema but was stopped by security guards at the entrance.
After he was prevented from entering, the man reportedly became violent and attacked the guards.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the incident to journalists on Saturday.
She said, “The suspect allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and injured another security personnel. The suspect was subsequently mobbed and died in the process. Two people have been confirmed dead.”
SP Adebisi said the suspect appeared to be destitute and was suspected to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack.
She added that the Chief Security Officer of the cinema has been taken into custody as part of the investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, the command is working to obtain and review the Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV, footage from the cinema to establish the sequence of events.
“The CCTV footage will also help investigators determine whether other people were involved in the incident,” she said.
The police added that the identities of the deceased have not been released and that investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and the deaths is ongoing.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no update on the condition of the injured security personnel.
The attack has sparked concerns among residents and business owners in Lekki over security at public entertainment centers.
Patrons who were at the cinema described the scene as “terrifying” and called for increased security presence at malls and cinemas across Lagos.
The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to unravel the full details of the incident.
