Omotola says her children faced d.eath threats during #EndSARS

OpenLife Nigeria reports that Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has opened up about the personal fallout from her involvement in the 2020 #EndSARS protests, revealing that her children became targets of death threats after a controversial social media post.

In a candid discussion on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, the actress reflected on how a comment she made online, questioning reports of violence at the Lekki toll gate, sparked a wave of backlash that extended to her family.

“The attack was very personal. My kids started getting death threats. It was weird because I was on the streets for #EndSARS. I was doing international advocacy,” Omotola said,
recounting the intensity of the response.

The #EndSARS movement, which erupted in October 2020, saw Nigerians demanding an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protests took a tragic turn on October 20, when security forces opened fire at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos.

Omotola clarified that her online query was meant to seek understanding, not to downplay the tragedy.

“Especially when EndSars happened with all the backlash. A lot of what I said was misunderstood. I have received death threats many times before. I am used to it,” she added.

Highlighting her long-standing advocacy work, Omotola noted,

“I also worked with Amnesty International. My husband was flying for Shell. And I went to protest against Shell in London. I have never seen anything like EndSars. It was intense.”

In the end, Omotola said the experience was a turning point, as the threats against her children made the #EndSARS backlash deeply personal and forced her to rethink how she engages in activism going forward.
