Gabriel Igbinedion’s 92nd Birthday Goes Sour As Oba Suspends Palace Singers For Violating Sacred Rule, Strips Isikhuan Group Leader Of Traditional Title

Gabriel Igbinedion’s 92nd Birthday Goes Sour

OpenLife News reports that celebrations marking the 92nd birthday of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, have  turned sour after the Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, indefinitely suspended the Isikhuan royal praise singers for violating a sacred palace rule.

The monarch also stripped the leader of the group, Juliet Omogui, of her traditional title, “Okao”, over the incident that occurred at the Esama’s residence.

What Happened

According to a statement by the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the Isikhuan group allegedly breached an ancient Benin taboo a few days ago.

The group reportedly staged a traditional performance at the residence of Chief Igbinedion that is exclusively reserved for the Oba.

The violation was said to have come to light after Omogui publicly admitted to the allegation in a viral video on social media.

In the wake of the development, the Oba directed Omogui to return the traditional headgear, “Okuku”, in her custody to the palace pending further directives.

Palace Convenes Emergency Meeting

The monarch’s decision was conveyed by the Obazelu of Benin, Chief Osaro Idah, during an emergency meeting at the palace on Sunday.

Members of the Isikhuan group were given an opportunity to explain their involvement and roles in the incident.

Speaking alongside other chiefs, Chief Idah, with Chief Ada Igbinovia, Eribo N’Ibiwe; Chief Imade Osamuyi Amos, Oshodi N’Ibiwe; and Chief Enoma Ogiesughe, Ogiesughe N’Ewaise, expressed displeasure over what they described as disrespect to the Benin monarchy.

Chief Idah also questioned why Chief Igbinedion permitted the Isikhuan group to perform in his honour, given his deep knowledge of Benin’s sacred customs and traditions, which he has vowed to uphold over the years.

Oba’s Verdict

Following deliberations, the Oba ordered:

Indefinite suspension of the entire Isikhuan royal praise singers

Stripping of Juliet Omogui of her title as “Okao”

Return of the “Okuku” headgear to the palace

The palace said the actions were taken to protect the sanctity of Benin customs and to serve as a deterrent to others.

Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, will turn  92 on September 11 but celebrations which  have commenced  have  been discoloured by the palace actions.
