Married  And Widowed At 19: Patience Ozokwo Breaks Silence On Marriage, Loss & Raising Seven Children Alone

Married  And Widowed At 19

OpenLife Nigeria reports that veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has shared a deeply personal story about love, loss, and resilience, offering rare insight into the experiences that shaped her life beyond the screen.

The celebrated actress spoke about entering marriage early, enduring years of hardship, and raising a large family alone after losing her husband.

Her story, which surfaced through the verified X (formerly Twitter) page Igbo History and Fact, paints a picture of a woman who learned strength through responsibility and sacrifice.

According to Ozokwo, marriage came into her life before she fully understood it.

“Marriage found me at just 19. It wasn’t my choice, my parents arranged it. At first, I was scared. I didn’t know how to love a man I didn’t choose,” she said.

Over time, what began as fear and uncertainty gradually transformed into genuine affection and partnership. She explained that commitment and patience allowed love to grow naturally between them.

“But as time passed, love grew. We spent 23 years together. He was sick for 15 of those years, and in 2000, he passed away,” Ozokwo added.

Much of her marriage was defined by caregiving, as her husband battled illness for more than a decade.

Those years, she revealed, tested her emotionally and physically, but also strengthened her devotion to family.

RAISING SEVEN CHILDREN AFTER LOSS

The actress revealed that although she had three biological children, her heart made room for more. Motivated by compassion, she adopted five children, expanding her family well beyond what she had originally imagined.

“We had three beautiful children, and I adopted five more. One of them died, so I now have seven,” she said.

After her husband’s death in 2000, Ozokwo chose not to remarry. Instead, she focused her energy entirely on raising her children, ensuring they grew up with stability, discipline, and emotional security. She noted that every decision she made afterward revolved around their wellbeing.

HER VIEWS ON MARRIAGE THEN AND NOW

Reflecting on how relationships have changed, Ozokwo expressed concern about the fragility of many modern marriages. She observed that despite increased education and awareness, commitment appears weaker today than in the past.

She recalled a time when couples were encouraged to endure challenges, communicate openly, and resolve conflicts instead of giving up easily. According to her, perseverance and shared values once formed the backbone of marriage, especially in arranged unions.

Ozokwo also stressed that intentional parenting played a major role in keeping her family united.

“I have told my children never to think of divorce. I raised my daughters to be respectful and my sons to be responsible. That is how I built a strong home through hardship, love, respect, and sacrifice,” she concluded.
