An oil billionaire died in Ghana. His body became the subject of a legal battle. His widow faced accusations from one of his sons. Questions about his will divided the family, while disputes over oil-company shares, traditional mourning rites and inheritance continued long after his burial

But beneath the headline-grabbing conflict lies a more complicated story: a sprawling family whose different branches found themselves on opposite sides of a battle over the legacy of one powerful man.

The death of High Chief Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs should have united his family around a common responsibility: honouring the patriarch, preserving his achievements and settling his estate according to the law.
Instead, his death on December 27, 2018, in Accra, Ghana, opened a chapter of extraordinary bitterness.

The man who had built Moni Pulo Limited into a major indigenous oil business left behind a family whose members had different relationships with him, different places in his life and, ultimately, different interests in the future of his estate.
His eldest sons had a history of disagreement with him over Moni Pulo.

His widow, Dr Seinye Lulu-Briggs, had managed important family business interests and maintained that her husband’s final wishes should be respected. His daughters had their own connections to the family and its businesses.

A son adopted from a former marriage later complained publicly that he had been excluded from the inheritance.
And then there was the question of the estate itself: who was entitled to what, which earlier agreements remained binding, and what effect should be given to the will and other arrangements made by the late chief?

These were not questions that could be settled by family rank alone.
They would be fought through lawyers, court filings, public statements and traditional institutions. The conflict would extend from Ghana to Nigeria, from the mortuary to the boardroom, and from the probate registry to the customary court.

Nearly eight years after the patriarch’s death, the Lulu-Briggs saga remains a powerful illustration of what can happen when family relationships, traditional authority and a valuable business empire collide.

THE MAN WHO BUILT THE DYNASTY

Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs was more than a wealthy businessman. He was a prominent Kalabari chief, philanthropist and influential figure in the Niger Delta.

He began his working life in the Nigerian Ports Authority before moving into business. Over time, he developed a portfolio of commercial interests, including hotel and oil-related ventures.

His greatest business achievement was Moni Pulo, the oil exploration and production company he founded in 1992. At a time when the oil industry was dominated by international companies and a relatively small number of powerful interests, the development of an indigenous oil business gave Lulu-Briggs a distinctive place in the sector.

His wealth supported a wider network of family, business and community relationships. He also became known for philanthropy through the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation.

In Abonnema and the wider Kalabari community, he occupied a traditional position that carried responsibilities beyond his commercial interests.
But there was one aspect of his life that would become particularly important after his death: his family was larger and more complicated than a simple list of biological children might suggest.

Over several relationships and marriages, he became a father, stepfather and adoptive father. Some of his children were sons who had grown up with expectations about family leadership and business succession. Others entered his household through later relationships.

That diversity was part of the story of his life. After his death, it became one of the complications surrounding his estate.

THE THREE ELDER SONS

Three names repeatedly appeared at the centre of the early business dispute: Senibo, Dumo and Sofiri Lulu-Briggs.
They were the patriarch’s elder sons and had been involved in a long-running disagreement with him over Moni Pulo years before his death.
The roots of the conflict stretched back to the early 2000s, when disputes over the company’s ownership and control led to legal proceedings.
The disagreement eventually produced settlement agreements in 2003 and 2004. Court reporting later recorded payments of $3 million to Dumo in 2003 and a further $5 million to Dumo, Senibo and Sofiri in 2004.

The late chief’s side relied on those agreements to argue that the sons had relinquished their shareholdings and agreed not to make further claims against the company.
The sons subsequently challenged the effect of the arrangements. They argued that the agreements had been breached and that the shares should not be treated as permanently lost to them.

The dispute became central to the later succession battle because Moni Pulo was not merely another family asset. It was the business through which much of Lulu-Briggs’s commercial legacy had been built.

SENIBO: THE ELDER SON

Senibo was the eldest of the three sons whose earlier business disagreements with their father became part of the later inheritance dispute.
In the days after the patriarch’s death, he was involved in discussions and preparations concerning the funeral.

Reports from the period also described him as one of the sons involved in the dispute over access to the body and the arrangements for burial.
His name appeared alongside those of Dumo and Sofiri in the earlier settlement agreements concerning Moni Pulo.

Those agreements became important when the ownership of the company was challenged after their father’s death.

The public record does not justify assuming that all three brothers held identical views on every aspect of the dispute. What can be established is that their earlier claims concerning the company became part of the legal history against which later litigation was assessed.

DUMO: THE MOST VISIBLE ADVERSARY

Of the late chief’s children, Dumo became the most publicly visible figure in the posthumous family conflict.
A businessman in his own right, he had previously worked within the family business environment before developing his own commercial interests.
His name appeared in the earlier dispute over Moni Pulo and, after his father’s death, in the battles over the release of the body, the circumstances of the death, the will and the ownership of shares.

Dumo challenged the arrangements presented by the widow, Seinye and raised allegations about his father’s death. Seinye denied wrongdoing.

His actions also brought him into conflict with the widow over how the funeral should be conducted and what should happen to the late chief’s estate.

The most contentious aspect of the public dispute was the allegation that Seinye had caused her husband’s death. It was a grave accusation, and she rejected it.

The autopsy report released in 2020 attributed the death to medical conditions involving pulmonary thromboembolism and related complications. It concluded that he had not died a violent death.

The report did not substantiate the allegation that Seinye had murdered her husband.
This is a crucial distinction in the history of the family conflict. Dumo’s suspicions and allegations were part of the public record, but they can’t be presented as proof that a crime occurred.

SOFIRI: THE THIRD BROTHER IN THE OWNERSHIP DISPUTE

Sofiri, the third of the elder sons, was also involved in the earlier dispute over Moni Pulo.
His name appeared in the settlement arrangements through which the late chief’s side maintained that the brothers had been paid for their shares.
The dispute later returned to court, where the sons sought to challenge the transfers and agreements.
In March 2023, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit brought by Dumo and three other plaintiffs challenging the late chief’s decision to transfer shares in Moni Pulo to Seinye, his daughters and the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation.

Justice James Omotosho held that the fresh action amounted to an abuse of court process because a related matter involving the same subject was already pending at the Court of Appeal.

The ruling was an important development in the ownership dispute, but its legal basis must be understood accurately: the fresh suit was dismissed because of the procedural problem created by the overlapping proceedings. It was not a blanket judicial resolution of every question concerning the family’s inheritance.

For the three elder sons, the history of the company dispute would remain inseparable from the larger argument over their father’s final wishes.

SEINYE AND THE TWO DAUGHTERS SHE BROUGHT INTO THE FAMILY

When Seinye married Lulu-Briggs in 2002, she came into the marriage with two daughters from an earlier relationship: Solate and Aima.
The late chief helped raise them and treated them as members of his family. Published biographical accounts identify both women as his stepdaughters.

That detail matters because it helps explain the different relationships within the household and the later controversy over business interests and inheritance.

Seinye’s relationship with the late chief was not simply that of a new wife entering an established family. She had her own children, while he already had biological children from earlier relationships.

The household that emerged from the marriage therefore brought together people whose relationships with the patriarch were not identical.

Over time, the late chief’s estate planning included interests associated with his daughters and the family foundation. Those arrangements became contested after his death.

SOLATE OVUNDAH-AKAROLO

Solate was one of the daughters Seinye brought into the marriage.
Her name appeared among the people identified as beneficiaries in the wider family arrangements concerning Moni Pulo and the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation.

She was also part of the wider family circle affected by the dispute over the burial. In a public letter issued before the funeral, prominent Kalabari chief Ferdinand Alabraba urged Dumo to ensure that both Seinye and the late chief’s daughter were included in the burial arrangements.

The letter reflected concerns that the family division was threatening the participation of important family members in the traditional rites.

The distinction between Solate’s place in the household and the legal status of the estate is important. Being raised by the late chief and being named in a corporate or estate arrangement are not necessarily the same as being his biological child.
Her place in the family must be understood through the particular legal and personal arrangements that applied to her.

AIMA OJEHOMON

Aima was Seinye’s other daughter from an earlier relationship.
Like Solate, she was raised within the household and became part of the extended family structure around the late chief.
Her name also appeared in published accounts identifying the family members associated with the wider Moni Pulo and foundation arrangements.

The presence of Solate and Aima in the family added another dimension to the succession dispute.

For the elder sons, questions about shares and the ownership of the company were linked to agreements made during their father’s lifetime. For Seinye, the central issue was whether the arrangements made by her husband should be respected. For the daughters, the question of their place in the family structure and the interests assigned to them formed part of the wider inheritance controversy.

The public record does not establish that Solate and Aima directed the conflict or that they were responsible for the litigation. Their significance lies in their place within the family arrangements that became contested after the patriarch’s death.

RACHAEL LULU-BRIGGS — THE BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER IN THE SUCCESSION STORY

Rachael Lulu-Briggs occupied a different position from Solate and Aima.
She was the late chief’s biological daughter, born in 1992 to Boma Wilcox.

Biographical accounts describe her birth as particularly significant to her father, who had previously had sons but no biological daughter.
He named her after his mother, Rachael Kioba Harrison Lawson, and she became an important part of the family story.

Rachael later became associated with the family business and was named among the beneficiaries involved in the share-transfer arrangements that became the subject of litigation.

When the Federal High Court dismissed Dumo’s 2021 suit in 2023, Rachael was among the defendants identified in the case, alongside Seinye, Solate, Moni Pulo Limited, the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation and the Corporate Affairs Commission.

That placed her name directly within the legal dispute over the late chief’s decision to transfer shares in the company.

The court’s ruling did not establish that Rachael had committed wrongdoing. She was among the people whose interests were challenged by the plaintiffs.

Her position illustrates one of the central tensions in the family battle: the difference between a child’s biological relationship with the patriarch and the legal interests the patriarch chose to allocate during his lifetime.

For Rachael, the dispute was not simply a public argument about family loyalty. It concerned business interests connected to a company her father had built.

The available reporting does not justify portraying her as the architect of the conflict. What can be said is that her interests, alongside those of Seinye, Solate and the foundation, became part of the litigation over Moni Pulo’s ownership.

THE ADOPTED SON WHO SAID HE HAD BEEN LEFT OUT

Another important figure in the wider family story is Chima Onimim Lulu-Briggs.
His background differed from that of the elder sons and the daughters.
His mother was Barrister Udeaku Obiora, who married the late chief in 1993.

Biographical accounts state that the marriage did not produce biological children, but Lulu-Briggs adopted her son, Chima, and gave him the name Onimim Lulu-Briggs.

The marriage ended in 2001.
In 2021, Onimim publicly complained that he had been excluded from the inheritance. In interviews published by Nigerian media, he said he did not consider himself included among the children listed in public accounts of the late chief’s family.

His complaint raised a different issue from the earlier battle between Dumo and Seinye.
The central question was whether his adoption and family relationship entitled him to the inheritance or recognition he believed he should have received.

His statements were his own account of the matter. They can’t be treated as a judicial finding that Seinye deliberately excluded him or that the estate was unlawfully distributed.

Nevertheless, his complaint revealed the broader complexity of the family.
The late chief’s household included biological children, stepchildren and an adopted child. In a succession dispute, those distinctions can have legal consequences depending on the applicable adoption records, wills, trust arrangements and other documents.

Onimim’s public intervention demonstrated that the argument over the estate was not limited to the three elder sons and the widow.
It also raised questions about how the late chief’s wider family understood the boundaries of membership, recognition and inheritance.

DATEIM, IYOWUNA AND THE OTHER BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY

The wider family also included Dateim Lulu-Briggs, identified in biographical accounts as the late chief’s son from another relationship, and Tamuno-Iyowuna Benson Lulu-Briggs, the son adopted by Lulu-Briggs and Seinye in 2008.

Their places in the family differed from those of the elder sons, but their names appeared in published accounts of the late chief’s children.
Their inclusion matters because the public description of the family as a contest between Dumo and Seinye can obscure the fact that several other children and descendants had interests or relationships that were affected by the estate arrangements.

The available reports do not establish that Dateim or Iyowuna led the public campaign against either side. Nor is there sufficient evidence to attribute particular motives to them.

What is clear is that the late chief’s estate was not a simple matter of one widow and three sons dividing a collection of assets.
The family structure was broader, and the legal arrangements surrounding the business and estate reflected that complexity.

The rights of each person must be assessed from the relevant documents and court decisions, not from assumptions based on age, family position or public visibility.

THE WILL THAT DEEPENED THE DIVISION

The dispute over the will became one of the most consequential chapters in the saga.
After Lulu-Briggs died, competing testamentary documents and questions about probate emerged.
In December 2020, TheCable reported that Dumo had appealed a Rivers State High Court judgment dismissing a suit brought by the three elder sons seeking to set aside probate granted in respect of a will presented by Seinye.

The sons’ side questioned the circumstances in which the documents had been presented and argued that other wills were on record.

Seinye’s position was that her husband’s wishes should be respected and that his estate had been arranged through legal instruments made during his lifetime.

The dispute was not merely about whether a particular beneficiary should receive a particular asset. It also concerned the legal status of the documents, the probate process and the relationship between the will, earlier share-transfer agreements and trust arrangements.

Those matters require careful attention to the relevant court decisions. A claim that a will is invalid is not the same as a court finding that it is invalid. Equally, the presentation of a will does not mean every dispute concerning the estate has been resolved.

The competing arguments turned the will into a symbol of the wider family divide.
For Seinye, it represented her husband’s final instructions. For the challenging sons, the documents and the arrangements associated with them became matters to contest through litigation.

The result was a succession battle in which the family struggled not only over the assets but also over the legal documents that were supposed to govern their distribution.

THE BODY IN GHANA AND THE BURIAL THAT BECAME A BATTLEFIELD

The fight over inheritance became inseparable from the dispute over Lulu-Briggs’s remains.
After his death in Accra, his body remained in a mortuary while the family pursued legal proceedings over who had the right to take custody of it and organise the burial.
Seinye maintained that her legal marriage gave her an important role in the funeral arrangements. Dumo and his brothers relied on Kalabari customs concerning the role of the deceased’s children and family leadership.

The matter went before a Ghanaian court.
On December 23, 2019, the Accra High Court ordered that the remains be released to the deceased’s family, led by Dumo, for burial in Nigeria. The court also directed that Seinye be represented in the arrangements and be allowed to participate in the funeral as the widow.

The family was required to undertake that she would not be subjected to cruel, inhumane or degrading customary practices.

The ruling reflected the court’s recognition of the family’s customary structure while also addressing the widow’s concerns.

The dispute nevertheless continued, and the burial did not take place until March 13, 2021, in Abonnema, Rivers State.

The delay was remarkable. A man whose wealth and influence had earned him public respect remained unburied for more than two years after his death.

The funeral eventually took place, but the legal and personal disputes continued.

THE MURDER ALLEGATION THAT SHOOK THE FAMILY

The accusation that Seinye was responsible for her husband’s death was one of the most damaging allegations in the dispute.
Dumo questioned the circumstances of the death and sought an investigation. Seinye denied wrongdoing.
The autopsy, conducted at Ghana’s 37 Military Hospital, became a major point of contention. The report was eventually released in February 2020.
It attributed Lulu-Briggs’s death to right lung infarction and severe haemorrhages associated with pulmonary thromboembolism, alongside other underlying medical conditions. The report concluded that he had not died a violent death.

That finding did not resolve every disagreement within the family, but it is essential to an accurate account of the case.
The allegation of murder was not established by the reported autopsy findings.
The distinction is particularly important because the accusation had become intertwined with the inheritance dispute.

Once a death is publicly linked to an allegation of foul play, it can become difficult to separate genuine concerns about the circumstances from the suspicion and anger generated by a wider family conflict.

A responsible account must therefore state both that the allegation was made and that the reported medical findings did not support a violent death.

THE FIGHT OVER MOURNING CUSTOMS

Years after the burial, the conflict entered another phase.
In July 2025, Vanguard reported that Dumo had brought a case against Seinye before the Degema Division of the Rivers State Customary Court.
The claim concerned alleged failures to observe customary mourning obligations, including sitting beside her husband’s body during the lying-in-state and participating in the burial rites.

Dumo sought orders that would affect her ability to use the Lulu-Briggs name and claim certain benefits associated with her position as the late chief’s widow.

The claim provoked strong reactions from supporters of Seinye, including women lawyers and activists who attended proceedings in solidarity with her.

The controversy was striking because the funeral had itself been delayed by disputes over access to the body and the arrangements for burial. Family members had offered competing accounts of responsibility for those delays.

The new case raised questions about whether mourning practices could be used to challenge a widow’s inheritance or status years after her husband’s death.

But the filing of a suit does not establish that the allegations are true or that the requested orders should be granted. The legal position depends on the evidence, the applicable law and the court’s decision.

The case showed how far the conflict had travelled from its original focus on the estate and the oil business.
The battle now touched on tradition, widowhood, personal identity and the limits of customary authority.

WHAT THE COURTS HAVE—AND HAVE NOT—DECIDED

The Lulu-Briggs saga has produced multiple proceedings, and their outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable.

In 2020, a Rivers State High Court dismissed a challenge brought by the three elder sons to probate granted in respect of a will presented by Seinye. Dumo appealed that judgment.

In 2023, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a fresh suit challenging the transfer of shares in Moni Pulo to Seinye, the daughters and the family foundation. The court held that the new action constituted an abuse of court process because a related case was already pending before the Court of Appeal.

In 2025, the dispute over customary mourning obligations returned to court.

These proceedings addressed different legal questions. A ruling on probate does not necessarily decide every question about company ownership. A dismissal for abuse of court process is not the same as a full trial of the underlying allegations. And a claim concerning mourning customs does not establish the validity of a challenge to an inheritance.

That distinction is important because the family’s dispute has often been described as though one court ruling settled the entire controversy.

THE BIGGER QUESTION: WHO REALLY INHERITS A FAMILY EMPIRE?

The Lulu-Briggs family battle is a reminder that a successful business can outlive its founder while the family arrangements surrounding it remain unsettled.

The late chief had biological children, stepchildren and an adopted son. He had built a major business, maintained a family foundation and made arrangements concerning his shares and estate.

After his death, the family disagreed over the meaning and effect of those arrangements.

The elder sons challenged aspects of the company ownership and succession documents. Seinye defended the late chief’s estate arrangements.

The daughters and the family foundation appeared in the ownership litigation. Onimim publicly complained that he had been excluded. Other children formed part of the wider family structure, even where the public record does not show that they led the legal battles.

The conflict demonstrates why succession planning must be clear, documented and communicated where appropriate. It also shows the importance of keeping corporate ownership arrangements distinct from personal expectations about inheritance.

A share transfer completed during a person’s lifetime may raise different legal questions from a bequest under a will. An adopted child’s rights may depend on legal documents and the applicable law. A stepchild’s position may differ from that of a biological child, depending on the arrangement in question.

Those issues cannot be resolved by assuming that every child is entitled to the same assets—or that the eldest son automatically controls the entire estate.

The law, the relevant documents and the decisions of the courts determine the outcome.

THE CRIME FILE VERDICT: A FAMILY STILL DIVIDED BY ITS PATRIARCH’S LEGACY

High Chief Olu Benson Lulu-Briggs built a business empire and became one of the most prominent figures in the Niger Delta. His family reflected a life lived across several relationships, marriages and generations.

That family complexity was not itself a problem. The crisis emerged when disagreements over business ownership, the will, burial arrangements and customary obligations became entangled in prolonged legal battles.

The three elder sons had a history of disputes with their father over Moni Pulo. Seinye defended the arrangements she said reflected her husband’s wishes. Solate and Aima, the daughters she brought into the marriage, and Rachael, the late chief’s biological daughter, became part of the wider story of the family’s business interests.

Onimim, the adopted son from an earlier marriage, publicly challenged his exclusion from the inheritance. Other children and descendants formed part of the extended family whose future was affected by the estate arrangements.

The public record does not justify reducing each person’s position to greed, revenge or a desire for control. Motives cannot be reliably established merely from the fact that someone participated in litigation.

What can be established is that the dispute has endured for years, damaged family relationships and drawn attention away from the achievements for which the patriarch was once celebrated.

The body was eventually buried. The courts ruled on some of the disputes. Other proceedings continued to raise questions about the estate, the family name and the reach of customary authority.

The deepest tragedy is that the man whose business success helped establish the family’s standing is now remembered, in part, through the divisions that followed his death.

The Lulu-Briggs empire was built over decades. The struggle over its legacy has lasted for years. And the family still faces the difficult task of separating the memory of its patriarch from the battles over his wealth, his wishes and the future of his name.
