OpenLife Nigeria reports that as Nigeria’s presidential election tribunal ruled on Wednesday that Nigeria’s main opposition parties failed to prove claims of electoral malpractice against the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) in February’s disputed elections, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has rejected the judgement.
According to the panel of judges “This petition is hereby declared unmeritorious,” one of the judges said, as the tribunal rejected the opposition challenge to Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s win in the presidential election.
The challenges came after one of the country’s most tightly fought elections, in which former Lagos governor Tinubu won 37 percent of the vote, beating Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party to secure the presidency of Africa’s most populous nation.
Abubakar and Obi had asked the court to invalidate the election, alleging irregularities.
Judges rejected all claims made by Labour Party candidate Obi, including fraud, charges electoral authorities broke the law and allegations Tinubu was ineligible to run.
Speaking on Thursday afternoon, Atiku said he still believes that the court is the sanctuary of justice even though the judgement was not in his favour.
He maintained that he is a stranger to legal battle and that he fully understands how the court process works.
Atiku disclosed that the “Use of technology was compromised,” during the elections adding that “Court failed to restore confidence. ”
“Judgement respected but I refuse to not accept it,” he declared stressing further that he has instructed his lawyers to file to Supreme Court because “ I have confidence in the judiciary. ”
He however admonished his supporters worldwide to remain calm and stay off protests and other forms of fomenting troubles..
“I take solace in the lesson I learned from my mentor, late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua. We may have lost a battle yesterday but the war is ahead of us and we shall win the war.
“To the disappointed member of PDP, don’t be discouraged. I am a foundation member and I still remain strong. Members should not loose hope because life is full of ups and down.
“Let us be loyal and remain faithful to PDP. We have a record and integrity to protect and maintain, ” he cautioned.
