IBB Speaks On 85th Birthday’

OpenLife News reports that former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), says the execution of his close friend and schoolmate, General Mamman Vatsa, was “one of the most difficult decisions” he took while in office.

Babangida, who turns 85 on Monday, made the revelation during an interview with Badeggi 90.1 FM in Minna, Niger State, as part of activities marking his birthday.

No Successful Coup In Nigeria Without Civilian Involvement

Speaking on Nigeria’s coup history, IBB said wealthy civilians have historically played key roles in sponsoring and supporting military takeovers.

“No successful coup in Nigeria’s history had occurred without civilian involvement,” he said.

The former military ruler, who led Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, added that Nigerians must understand the dynamics that shaped past interventions in government.

The Vatsa Coup Plot Of 1985

Babangida also recounted the events that led to the 1985 plot to topple his government and the eventual execution of General Mamman Vatsa, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

He said he found it hard to believe the allegations because of their long history together.

“Initially, I found it difficult to believe reports linking Vatsa to a planned coup because of our long-standing friendship and shared history,” he said.

According to IBB, he summoned Vatsa and General Mohammed Gado Nasko to his office after a senior officer mentioned both names in connection with the plot.

“When they arrived, I asked them about the reports that they had been mentioned in a plot to topple my government. Both of them denied any involvement,” he recalled.

A military commission of inquiry was later set up. While Nasko was cleared, the panel found evidence linking Vatsa to the plot.

“I was shocked, devastated and deeply disappointed when Vatsa’s alleged involvement was established. There was nothing I could do to exonerate him from the consequences prescribed by military law. My hands were tied. That was how I lost my brother, General Mamman Vatsa,” Babangida said.

Vatsa was executed by firing squad in March 1986.
IBB and Vatsa grew up together, attended Bida Middle School, now Government College Bida, graduated the same year, and joined the military together.

Call For Hope Amid Current Challenges

Amid Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges, Babangida urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and support the administration of <strong>President Bola Tinubu.

“I am optimistic that the government’s ongoing efforts will ultimately yield positive results and improve the country’s situation,” he said.

Legacy

Babangida ruled Nigeria for 8 years between 1985 and 1993. His tenure remains one of the most consequential in Nigeria’s political history, marked by structural adjustment reforms, the annulled June 12 election, and several key political transitions.
