How I Managed The Burial Of Abiola As Lagos Governor—General Buba Marwa

How I Managed The Burial Of Abiola As Lagos Governor

OpenLife Nigeria reproduces an earlier interview published in Daily Trust newspaper in which General Buba Marwa, who was Lagos State governor when Chief Moshood Abiola died in 1998, recalls his experience wading through angry crowd of June 12 enthusiasts to get the late Concord Newspaper publisher buried .

General Buba Marwa, who clocked 72 on September 9, is currently the Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

His narratives reveal the undercurrent that played out the day Abiola passed away

The second most memorable moment (as Governor of Lagos) would have to be a collection of events around the time of late MKO Abiola’s death. He died when I was in Abuja, where I was for a Council of State meeting. Around 5pm, I got a call from the State House that I should see the Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

So I went, and he told me what happened. I told him I would need a plane to go back, because I knew the place would be on fire. That night, when we got to Lagos, even to get to the Governor’s Lodge on Victoria Island, we had to take Mile 12 and Apapa. Even at that, we had to do a little shooting in the air to secure the road.

The situation soon degenerated, and I called a security meeting that involved clerics. By the next day, it had become so bad, and they were going after northerners, saying that we have killed Abiola. So I said I have to get to the streets, and my people said that was not safe.

<figure id="attachment_30296" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-30296" style="width: Nollywood Actress, Shine Rosman, Raises Alarm Over Alleged Sexual Harassment In Lagos OpenLife reports that Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has spoken about what she describes as ongoing incidents of sexual harassment affecting women in parts of Lagos, particularly in Yaba. She said the issue is widely known among residents but remains unaddressed. “Do you know how bad sexual harrssment is in Lagos? Like go to Yaba, as a girl and see how you will be touched inappropriately. Everybody hearing this knows that it is true. But till today, nothing is being done about it.” She described what she claims are repeated incidents of inappropriate contact in public spaces without consequences for those responsible. “You’re walking in Yaba and people are touching you inappropriately and nothing will happen.” Rosman questioned the absence of effective intervention and raised concerns about personal safety in such environments. “If the government is not going to do anything, is it not ok for us to defend ourselves? In 2026, in a country like Nigeria, s+xual har+ssment is still one of the most passive things.” She also raised concerns about the implications of such behaviour occurring in open public spaces. “If a man can s+xually h+rass you casually during the day, what do you think he can do behind closed doors when no one is looking?”. The comments were made during an interview with Tolu Afilaka, where she discussed women’s safety in public areas of Lagos.
