Hope Uzodinma’s Survival Battle Gets Messier As 2027 Enemy Camp Expands
OpenLife News reports that governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State wants to be Senate President in 2027. But the road to that ambition is getting narrower, not wider. Every week, his list of political enemies grows, and yesterday’s inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja showed how messy that battle has become.
Three clear shots were fired at Uzodimma in one hall, and none of them came from the opposition.
Akpabio: The Incumbent Who Doesn’t Want To Leave
The most direct attack came from the man Uzodimma wants to replace – Senate President Godswill Akpabio.Akpabio used the campaign council inauguration to openly lobby President Bola Tinubu for a second term as Senate President.
“If the cloth is not torn, why try to amend it? If you try to amend it, you are going to tear the cloth,” Akpabio told Tinubu, quoting Governor Charles Soludo.
He then warned governors eyeing other offices: “You must not abandon your people. I did eight years as a governor.
The constitution says you should do eight years. There is no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available.”
“I have been in this business for over 25 years, and I always win,” he added.Akpabio did not mention Uzodimma by name, but the target was obvious. Uzodimma is APC senatorial candidate for Imo West in 2027 and is reported to be planning to resign as governor before January 2028 to move to the Senate in June 2027.
As secretary of the Presidential Campaign Council, Uzodimma himself declared at the same event: “I will be on the ballot as a senatorial candidate.”Akpabio’s message: Stay in Imo. The Senate President seat is not vacant.
Wike: The Performance Test
The second shot came from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whose remark yesterday has now set political tongues wagging.
Wike, speaking at the campaign team inauguration, indirectly told Uzodimma that anyone who cannot deliver his state should not claim “we won.”The context is brutal for Uzodimma. Imo remains one of the most volatile APC states.
The party is factionalized, insecurity is high, and the governor’s grip on the South-East APC structure is constantly challenged by other leaders.
In 2023, APC’s presidential performance in the South-East was its weakest nationally.Wike’s standard is simple: You want to be Senate President? First, show you can deliver your state.
If you cannot deliver Imo for Tinubu in 2027, you have no moral right to say “we” won and therefore “we” should reward you.
It is a performance legitimacy test that Uzodimma is currently failing in the eyes of his rivals.
The Presidency: The Silent Cold Shoulder
The third enemy is the most dangerous – indifference from the Presidency.
President Tinubu at the inauguration told the council: “So you will excuse me from going everywhere with you. We have bills to pay.”
That statement, while about campaign logistics, signals Tinubu’s posture. He wants a stable, loyal National Assembly that will not distract his second term. Akpabio is already giving him that. Why would he trade a known, loyal Senate President who says “the National Assembly is so much with you” for a new, ambitious governor from a zone where APC is electorally weak?
The Senate Presidency is elected by senators, not governors.
But presidential body language matters. Akpabio is begging Tinubu to discourage Uzodimma. So far, Tinubu has not discouraged Akpabio.
Why Uzodimma’s Enemy’s Camp Is Expanding
Uzodimma’s problem is structural in line with timing. His second term as governor ends in January 2028. The 11th Senate will be inaugurated in June 2027.
He would have to abandon his state mid-term to pursue a Senate Presidency ambition. That narrative of abandonment is exactly what Akpabio is weaponizing.
Zoning Trap: If APC retains zoning to South-South for Senate President, Akpabio has the natural advantage. If it zones to South-East to appease Ndigbo, Uzodimma will face stronger South-East contenders like Dave Umahi, Orji Kalu and others who will argue Uzodimma cannot claim South-East on behalf of APC when he cannot even unite Imo APC.
Governor vs Senator War
Sitting senators do not like governors jumping in to take leadership. Akpabio himself was a governor, but he first served as Minority Leader and learned the Senate ropes.
Uzodimma wants to jump from Government House to Senate President’s chair. That offends the Senate establishment.
Uzodimma told the council, “We must jettison every misgiving we have against each other. We must reconcile our differences.”
But reconciliation is hard when you are running for a job someone else is already sitting in, and when Wike is asking you to first go and win your state.
For a man who wants to preside over 109 senators, Uzodimma is increasingly presiding over an expanding camp of enemies which includes an incumbent Senate President who wants to stay, a powerful FCT Minister questioning his electoral value, and a Presidency that prefers continuity over disruption.
The Senate Presidency race has not even started, but Hope Uzodimma’s survival battle has already gotten messier.
