Buba Marwa Should Resign Immediately–Hon. Bassey Ewa

Buba Marwa should resign immediately over reckless statement
OpenLife Nigeria reports that just barely three months after Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa, ret’d, assumed office as Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, he has been called upon to resign honourably or be disgraced out of office.
The call for his resignation arose from a statement credited to him to the effect that “one, in every seven Nigerians, is a drug addict.”
General Marwa was said to have made the statement when he paid Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina.
Marwa, a former military administrator of Lagos State, said “One, in seven Nigerians, takes drugs. We have found out that there is a nexus between drug use and crime.”
Reacting on Friday, during a conversation with OpenLife, Honourable Bassey Eko Ewa called on Marwa to tender his resignation letter immediately.
Honourable Ewa, who was the Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly between 2003-2007, before proceeding to House of Representatives in 2007, lamented the poor judgment of Buba Marwa.
He took serious exemption to such a wholesale submission that ‘one, in seven Nigerians, is a drug addict.’
“Where did he get his statistics? There is no justification to what Marwa has said. It is not true in my Yakurr constituency. It is not true in my Cross River Central Senatorial District. It is not true in my Cross River State. It is not true in Reps and other parts of Abuja where I stay.
“I have interacted with many Nigerians both home and abroad including the rich, middle class and the lower class. Nigerians are decent people. We are not a drug country.
“Buba Marwa must resign. If his mission is to come to office and malign Nigerians by calling them drug addicts, the honourable thing for him to do is to resign immediately.
“It is this kind of statement from the likes of Marwa that scares investors away. These are the kind of statements that create negative impressions about Nigeria and Nigerians home and abroad.
“Even if there are drug addicts, it does not translate to one out of seven Nigerians. Marwa has indicted whole lots of innocent Nigerians. He generalized without statistics. I call on the National Assembly to do the needful. He must resign immediately,” Honourable Ewa demanded.
Born on September 9, 1953 in Kaduna State, Marwa who hail from Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State attended the Nigerian Military School, Zaria and the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
He Later served as Governor of Borno State during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida and Governor of Lagos State during the military administration of General Sani Abacha.
