46 Years After, Cuba And Somalia Restore Diplomatic Ties

OpenLife Nigeria has gathered that in the afternoon of April 4th, 2023, the Ambassador of Cuba to the Republic of Kenya, Juan Manuel Rodríguez Vázquez, presented to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Credentials accrediting him as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba.

During the solemn accreditation ceremony in Villa Somalia, presidential headquarters, the Cuban ambassador conveyed to the Somali president a cordial greeting from the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and from the Cuban people to the brother people of Somalia. He also expressed the willingness of the Cuban authorities to develop bilateral and friendship relations between the two nations.

By his part, President Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the new Cuban Envoy to Mogadishu, while thanking our country for its support in training Somali professionals, and reiterating the willingness to work for the strengthening of bilateral relations.

However, it would be noted that this development is coming after Somalia and Cuba severed diplomatic relations for several years.

Abshir Omar Jama confirmed the diplomatic rapprochement in a Twitter post on Monday.

“Having established diplomatic relations between 1972-1977, we welcome the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cuba governed by cooperation and mutual respect,” he wrote.
