Why I Dumped APC—Senator Iyabo Obasanjo

OpenLife Nigeria reports that former Senator who represented Ogun Central, Professor Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, has said that her defection from the All Progressives Congress(APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was a result of compassion and love for the good people of Ogun Central, saying that care and compassion are the bedrock of the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP).

Iyabo Obasanjo initially declared her intention to run for governorship of Ogun State on the All Progressives Congress, APC, platform in February 2026.
However, she suspended her aspiration in April 2026 after state leadership endorsed Senator Solomon Adeola as the consensus candidate.

She subsequently resigned from the APC, citing a lack of consultation and unfair treatment in the consensus process, and has since shifted her support to the PDP’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.
She defected from the APC to the PDP in May 2026.

The senator made this known during a courtesy visit to her residence by the Liberty group, axis of Jelili Kayode Amusan Concerned Volunteers group, held at the Obasanjo Hilltop in Abeokuta.

APC and PDP

She said that her endorsement of various groups, in particular the Liberty group, was a signal of her performance and philanthropies to her constituents as a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health and former Senator, during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“In fact, I like helping people, and PDP as a party has always been a people-centred party, which further helps me to spread my philanthropic gesture to my constituents. And, I promise to integrate all the groups into our platform as well as assure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of my total support in the coming general election,” Obasanjo-Bello said.

She said that APC does not align with her vision for the people of her constituency, which prompted her to leave the party.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the group, Mr. Kazeem Adedoyin, said the group members cut across Ifo, Ewekoro, Abeokuta-South, Abeokuta-North, Odeda and Obafemi-Owode local government areas, adding that their endorsement came as a result of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello’s landmarks achievement while serving as a Senator representing Ogun Central in 2007-2011.

While promising their total loyalty and support for the Senator, Adedoyin disclosed that more than 95 per cent of their members have their voter’s card, and were ready to vote en masse for Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, Ladi Adebutu for governor during the forthcoming election.
