What I Went Through To Build The Jenifa Brand—Funke Akindele
OpenLife reports that for most fans, Funke Akindele is the face of joy, laughter, and the beloved Jenifa brand.
But behind the glitz and accolades lies a story of immense sacrifice and unyielding dedication.
Speaking at the International Women’s Day event organized by Wema Bank, the actress gave an honest glimpse into the journey few get to see.
“The success you see today didn’t come without a price,”
Akindele began. “We are seeing the billions, we are all saying congratulations, the accolades, Funke is doing a great job. I want to be like Funke, but what it costs me to be sitting here today is a lot.”
Akindele revealed that building the Jenifa empire demanded almost total isolation.
“I remember locking myself up in Amen Estate for almost two years, just building the Jenifa brand. Writing, producing, directing, playing Jenifer, supervising every department to grow the brand.”
Every part of production rested on her shoulders, leaving little room for parties, outings, or social interactions.
Her colleagues often misunderstood her focus. “And I remember my colleagues will be so mad at me for not going to people’s parties. What’s wrong with you? She is a sadist, but they didn’t know what I was doing,” she recalled.
Beyond the social sacrifice, Funke spoke about the mental resilience required.
“It took my time, my comfort. Sometimes I want to relax, so I remind myself to stand up. No time to chill, you have a target.” And there were moments of vulnerability too:
“Then it took vulnerability; I was vulnerable in the sense that when you pour in different things, and you’re all into the production, and some things don’t work out, you sit back and watch them criticise you. I had to take it in, it’s difficult, but it has helped me today to grow.”
Funke Akindele’s story is a powerful reminder that fame and financial success often come with personal sacrifices.
Her journey reflects the determination, discipline, and courage required to transform a vision into a legacy.
