Tension In Lagos As Newly Elected Assembly Speaker
OpenLife Nigeria has reliably gathered that the atmosphere of Lagos State House of Assembly is currently in frightening mode.
According to credible information, stern, armed security personnel have cordoned off the premises of Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, as lawmakers are set to hold an emergency plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025, amid tense situation.
As early as 7 am, the heavy presence of security, which had been stationed at the assembly promises and environs for about two weeks, got boosted on Monday, ahead of likely change in leadership of the Lagos House.
It was gathered that the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is expected to tender her resignation as speaker to pave way for the emergence of a new speaker to be in tandem with the zoning arrangement for candidates from the west zone.
Meanwhile, men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and armed men from the Police Command have taken strategic positions around the premises, with every guest, including staff being searched thoroughly before being allowed access to the complex.
“The atmosphere in the Assembly this morning is very tensed with heavy security around the Assembly.
“It was difficult for the staff to gain access to the Assembly. It took me over an hour before I was allowed into the premises,” one of the staff, who spoke to under anonymity, said.
It would be recalled that following the crises that broke as a result of the removal of Mr Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Assembly and Olalekan Onafeko as Clerk of the House by 32 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, President Tinubu had set up a high-powered committee of the party led by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba including former APC National Vice Chairman, South-west, Pius Akinyelure and others to resolve the crises.
To the surprise of all, the report from the findings of the Bisi Akande’s committee has been thrown into the trash can.
Insiders say that the committee has been disbanded.
Information has it that the Presidency frown at the report simply because it goes against Obasa’s interest.
“Mrs Mojisola Meranda, who has been acting as the substantive Speaker of the House will have to vacate that seat because those who control the night and day of Lagos politics want Obasa back,” a credible source confided in OpenLife Sunday afternoon in Abuja.
