Tackling gender-based violence
OpenLife Nigeria reports that South-South Professional Women Association in conjunction with Foundation for Partnership Initiative in Niger Delta (PIN) has flagged off a 16-day enlightenment campaign against gender-based violence particularly against females in the Niger Delta Region.
Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue.
The flag off ceremony was at Uvwie Hall PTI Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area recently with the theme: ‘ End Violence Against Women Now ‘ commenced on 25th November and will end on 10th December 2021.
A facilitator of the enlightenment campaign, Dr Joyce Ogwezi who doubles as the Head of Department (HOD) Mass Communication Department Delta State University, Abraka who spoke with newsmen in chat shortly after the event, explained that the exercise was aimed at putting an end to the battering of women and other kinds of violence against women.
She, therefore, urged government at all levels, corporate bodies and good-spirited Niger Deltans to support the campaign in order to make society safer for women.
