OpenLife Nigeria reports that as the struggle to clasp the plum position of the president of the apex Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, continues to dominate discourse, one of the aspirant in the Ohanaeze President General election, and former Imo State Chapter President of Ohanaeze, Professor Chidi Osuagwu, on Friday, pulled out of the race for the election fixed for Sunday.
Osuagwu, who
Professor Chidi Osuagwu who served as President of Imo State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo between 2007-2010 said to newsmen in Owerri, that he took the decision following the outcome of concerned Ime-Obi members virtual meeting held on Thursday, that the election should be suspended for failure to adhere to constitutional procedures as well politicization of the process of the election.
He added that the Ime-Obi, requested the outgoing President of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo, to quickly handed over to the Southeast Christian Association, CAN, to run the affairs of the association for two months and conduct an election.
“I am an aspirant in the presidential contest of Ohanaeze Ndigbo a number of events have occurred and I think they should be discussed publicly. The happenings in Ohanaeze have not been handled well and it is bizarre.
“Looking at it, I have bought the form for Ohanaeze election, which was sold for a half a million naira, it is so strange that Ohanaeze expected to be serving the peoples interests is now used in making money-like political parties. This is part of the problem at the heart of Ohanaeze, we saw people could not differentiate their political interests from the Ohanaeze election. It is good to tell you that some of the procedures did not follow the guidelines that is why we are concerned about this whole thing. I am here to say that I support this move. I endorse the Ime-Obi, that says let things be done in the proper way.”
But Chief Aguene appealed for calm saying “Imo is very much at the centre of this election. We appeal for calm. What we need is the best candidate that will pilot the affairs of Ndigbo anywhere in the world.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a social cultural organisation that looks into the affairs of Ndigbo anywhere he resides in the world including those that are in Igbo land,” he emphasized.
Speaking further on the tenure of the outgoing president, Chief Aguene said
“Well, he has done his best. He has made his own efforts. Every leader works with his conscience and leadership is sacrifice and not enterprise. I may say something positive about Nnia Nwodo and people will think that we have gotten some deals. I may say something negative about him and people will see me as an enemy of Nnia Nwodo or we are not in good terms,” he explained.
