Nigeria In Darkness As National Grid Collapses 2nd Time Within A week

OpenLife Nigeria reports that Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered its second total collapse of 2026 on Tuesday morning, January 27.
This is happening just four days after the previous failure on January 23.
The collapse occurred around 10:54 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, dropping generation to 39 MW from 3,825 MW, then to 0 MW.

Power generation dropped to almost zero megawatts, causing a nationwide blackout as all 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) lost supply.

Meantime, no official statement was immediately released by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), reports indicated a system-wide disturbance, including the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines.

All 11 DisCos, including Abuja, Eko, Ikeja, and Kano, reported 0.00 MW load allocation, confirming total failure.

However, available information says restoration efforts are currently underway.

An insider, who is not authorized to speak publicly on electricity issue said in confidence to OpenLife that “The persistent failures are attributed to a combination of aging infrastructure, poor maintenance, and a lack of spinning reserves, causing significant economic disruption across the country.”
