OpenLife News reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reminded Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs), importers, distributors, dealers and retailers of SIM-enabled devices of their statutory obligation to comply with Type Approval regulations.
The Commission said it is strengthening monitoring and enforcement of existing requirements through technology-enabled verification to ensure that devices imported, sold and used in Nigeria meet applicable standards.
In a notice on Sunday, the NCC said the compliance obligation is under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, the Type Approval Regulations 2024 and the Type Approval Business Rules 2024.
It listed the key requirements:
Type Approval: All device models intended for importation, assembly, distribution or sale in Nigeria must have obtained the required NCC Type Approval as outlined in Section 132 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 and Regulation 4 of the Type Approval Regulations 2024.
Device Verification: OEMs, ODMs, importers and other suppliers must ensure IMEI information of individual devices is submitted through the approved compliance process for verification before sale and distribution.
Existing Stock: Distributors, dealers and retailers should confirm that devices already held in stock meet Type Approval and device verification requirements.
New Imports: Devices brought into Nigeria must comply with applicable Type Approval and device verification requirements before being placed on the market.
The Commission said it has undertaken extensive engagements with OEMs, ODMs, importers and relevant industry associations, and encouraged businesses uncertain about compliance to seek guidance through approved onboarding and support channels.
It said the automated process will strengthen oversight of devices entering the market, help identify irregularities, and in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, support reconciliation of import records and ensure fair competition.
The NCC warned that upon full implementation, devices that fail to meet requirements may be restricted from accessing Nigerian mobile telecommunications networks in accordance with the approved enforcement framework.
