Lamentations in Delta State

Lamentations in Delta State call for concerns
OpenLife Nigeria reports that there are lamentations in the North and Central Senatorial districts of Delta State.
According to available information, on Wednesday, a high-tension cable allegedly belonging to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), fell on some shops, along the Old Abraka Road in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta, destroying property worth millions of naira.

It was gathered the incident took place in the middle of last night while power was on.

According to our sources, the damage would have been more if people were still in their various shops and that fire was prevented from spreading to other buildings by the swift response of personnel of Nigeria Fire Service in the area.

One of the victims, Mr Ignatius Festus, a welder, said that he only arrived at his shop in the morning to behold the destruction of his property and that of his neighbors.

“We had light all though yesterday, showing up this morning to see the darkest day of my life. I was told that it is high-tension cable that fell on the roof of our shops.

“My welding machine, generator, coil and other equipment I may not be able to recall at the moment were totally wrecked,” he stated

While commending the men of Nigeria Fire Service for their intervention, Mr Festus appealed to governments at all levels and well-meaning individuals in the society to come to their aid.

A resident of the area, who gave his name simply as Okoh, however called on authorities concerned to put measures on ground to avert such occurrences.

“As we all know, we are about to welcome the rainy season, BEDC officials, fire service and other security agencies must be at alert in order to curb unnecessary loses,” he noted.

Similarly, in Delta Central senatorial district, some concerned motorists plying Warri-Sapele Road by Enerhen Junction area have appealed to the contractor handling the on-going drainage project to rehabilitate the dug portion by 3rd Marine Gate (now filled with sharp sand) in the course of the project at as the time of filing this report.

A commercial tricycle (keke) rider, Kingsley Onovughakpor expressed fears that the sand filled area of the road, if not properly rehabilitated, could cause more damages to the road.

Onovughakpor noted that the depression on the said filled portion of the road was causing serious traffic hold ups mostly during rush hours.

A private car owner, Chief Akpojotor Adjarho, who spoke in the same vein, complained that the depression on the said portion of the road had damaged many vehicles.

He called for the proper rehabilitation of the sand filled portion of the road to its original quality before it was dug by the contractor.
