Lagos Speaker, Obasa, Troubled

OpenLife Nigeria reports that the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Right Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, is troubled.
The ebullient and well read Speaker is not worried as a result of incompetence and capacity to function in the 10th State Assembly as the Speaker but he is worried because of emerging political configurations.
At the moment, what had earlier seemed a clear highway for his retention of the number legislative seat has become opaque.
Nothing is certain any more. Nothing is sure.
This is because Honourable Mustain Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe State Constituency I and Chairman of the House Committee on Works in the outgoing 9th Assembly, has publicly declared his intention to run for the Speakership seat of the State Assembly.
Therefore, as it is in the National Assembly hot contest for Principal offices, Obasa has to fight the battle of his life to retain the Speakership seat.
More disturbing is the emerging fact that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is said to have approved the change of leadership in the House.
According to information, Obasa is on record to have spent time, energy and money to support Tinubu’s presidential desire.
“So, it is not because of lack of loyalty. But Tinubu, for reason best known to him, has okayed change of leadership in the House,” a source confided in OpenLife Wednesday night.
Further, the source disclosed that apart from Tinubu’s shadow in the change of leadership, Tobun’s aspiration to be speaker is supported by precedence.
“Nothing is awkward in Tobun’s aspiration. The aspiration is supported by precedence. There was a time in Lagos here when the Speaker and deputy governor came from same Lagos West senatorial district. That was precisely in 2015 when Obasa became speaker. As of that time, Oluranti Adebule from Lagos West was deputy governor.
So, if the next Speaker comes from Lagos East with deputy governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat,, it is supported by precedence,” the source stated.
Information however, has it that Obasa has increased his tempo of consultation and lobby to ensure he retains the seat.
