Kidnapped UNIJOS Student Freed After Negotiations

OpenLife reports that the student of the University of Jos, identified as John Arum , has been freed after spending several days in captivity following his abduction on April 12, 2026, along the Jos–Kaduna highway.

The incident sparked concern across the university community and beyond after it was confirmed that he had been taken away by armed men during the encounter.

Soon after, communication was established with his family, with the abductors demanding a ransom estimated at about ₦30 million in exchange for his release.

At a point during the period of captivity, a disturbing video circulated showing him being assaulted.

The clip intensified public anxiety and was reportedly used to exert pressure during negotiations with his family.

As days passed, appeals for his safe return grew within the University of Jos community.

Students, alumni, and concerned members of the public continued to call for his protection and release, while the university’s alumni association also acknowledged the situation and followed developments closely.
Eventually, he was released by his captors after nearly two weeks in detention.

His release was confirmed by representatives of the UNIJOS alumni association, who stated that he had been reunited with his family.

Officials have not disclosed whether any ransom was paid or whether security operatives played a direct role in securing his freedom.

However, those familiar with the situation report that he appeared weak and emotionally shaken after the experience and is currently receiving care and support from relatives.

The case has once again drawn attention to persistent security concerns along major travel routes in the region, with renewed calls for improved safety measures to protect commuters and residents.
