Falana Offers Tips To Candidates
OpenLife Nigeria reports that Mr. Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN and leading advocate for good governance has offered tips to candidates in the 2023 general elections on how to protect their votes.
Falana, who spoke on Sunday morning during an interactive session on Arise TV, noted that Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, has become “A game changer,” in Nigeria’s democratic practice and therefore should be given the desired considerations in candidates’ planning and execution of strategies to win elections.
“Political parties should educate their supporters on the importance of BVAS and make them to understand that they must subject themselves to BVAS accreditation so that votes can count,” he said.
Falana noted that he is very confident in the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC led by Professor Mahmood Yakubu but added for the country to achieve credible poll on February 25 and March 31 respectively, “All hands must be on deck for a successful poll. Political parties, agents must ensure proper elections are conducted. Voters must be captured by BVAS. Media must play a sensitization role,” he advised.
Optimistically, Falana hinted that a time will come when election results will no longer be in dispute because the process will be transparent enough to dissuade losers from going to court. But to achieve that, he stressed that the current BVAS method must be supported to work.
Above all, Falana who digested the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal judgment last week which reversed the results of the July 16 election contest, emphasized that the most important aspect of the judgment “Is the use of BVAS.”
