In a bid to shore up its tourism potential, the Delta State government is funding the upgrade of the Lander Brothers Anchorage
OpenLife reports Delta State government has earmarked N524 Million to redevelop the Lander Brothers Anchorage to shore up the tourism potential of the State.
The Lander Brothers were British explorers who discovered the mouth of the River Niger. They anchored on the lower Niger in February 1834 during their third exploratory trip in Bussa, near Asaba.
A Richard Lander Museum was built in memory of the Lander Brothers-Richard and John who anchored at about that spot of the River Niger during the expedition that they took over from Mungo Park. The museum chronicles the voyage and activities of Lander.
On Tuesday, November 3, Delta State Executive Council approved the development and management of the Lander Brothers Anchorage in Asaba.
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu said that the upgrade of the facilities at the Anchorage will cost N524m.
The Commissioner explained that the cardinal goal of Delta State government led by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa remains to tackle unemployment, create wealth and improve tourism
“It is being done from the private sector perspective and Exco has approved a lease of 13years to Abuja Boat Club to develop and manage the historic site,” the Commissioner said.
