Delta celebrates Statehood @ 29 as Okowa sues for unity

Delta State is 29 years old.

The State was created on August 27 among other States in Nigeria by the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, ret’d.

Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Information, says the 29th-anniversary celebration would be low-keyed.

Mr Aniagwu made the disclosure while briefing journalists on the preparations for the 29th anniversary of the creation of Delta.

Conveying the governor’s message, Aniagwu thanked Deltans for the co operation with Okowa’s administration. He urged them imbibe the spirit of unity as a growth template for the State in the years ahead.

Continuing, Aniagwu emphasized that the state government realizes the need to thank God. He added that in 29 years, the state has transformed from tribal concerns to that of a united Delta.

Aniagwu further stressed that the state government has done well in delivering the dividends of democracy to the citizenry. He pointed out government frank efforts in the areas of infrastructure, health, education, job and wealth creation, and agriculture.

DELTA COVID-19

Breaking down COVID-19 statistics, the commissioner disclosed that as at today, Delta State has recorded a total of 1,701 cases. Of the number, 1,518 cases have been discharged while 142 remain as active cases. A total of 46 persons were claimed as casualties, unfortunately.

The Commissioner noted that the figure kept changing from time to time based on several factors. Among the factors, according to him are success in contact tracing and testing. The state government, he said, is on course in the fight at flattening the curve on COVID-19.

According to the commissioner, the government has established several treatment centres. He said a second testing centre, located at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara is at completion stage.

CAUTION

He used the occasion to call on residents to continue to adhere to COVID-19 protocols. The Commissioner added that contact tracing is still on in the state.

“We are still very much on course. We have a number of treatments centres. The second testing centre at Oghara is about completion. All this aims at flattening the curve.

“Tracing of contacts is still very much on. But we enjoin everyone to continue strictly adhere to the COVID-19 protocols,” the commissioner said.
