Construction of Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam commences

The construction of Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, approved by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in November 2019, has started.

This project which is designed to be a central roller compacted concrete combine, earth and rock fill dam on the banks, is expected to serve Ghanaians in stabilizing power supply especially in the North Ghana’s renewable energy capacity by 2% to 10% by 2030 increase  to meet the United Nations Framework for Climate Change (UNFCC)

, assist in Agriculture, curb flood  as well as promoting irrigation initiatives.

In addition, the Dam has the potential to increase annual rice production in the country by up 117,000 tons and maize up to 49,000.

The primary components of the Pwalugu Multi Purpose Dam Project consist of a dam with an elevation of 165m near the Pwalugu bridge on the white Volta River and the maximum reservoir area of 350km2; a Power House consisting of two turbines 60mw installed capacity and 16.5BMW of firm continuous capacity; an Irrigation Scheme consisting of a 12m high weir and a Canal network (main primary, secondary and tertiary canals) for 24000ha of land;  a 15km overhead line for export of power to an existing transmission line and a 50MW Solar Power Facility.

Stakeholder Engagement by Volta River Authority, VRA towards the construction of the Pwalugu Multi Purpose HYDRO, Solar and Irrigation Project at Kurugu has been initiated. The solar component will compliment the hydro energy to enhance reliability.

Speaking at Walewale the West Mamprusi District capital as part of VRA’s community engagement strategy, the Senior Executive Liaison Officer to the VRA Chief Executive in charge of Stakeholder Engagement for the Pwalugu Dam Mr. David Prah stated that the Volta River Authority will continue to engage with the Chiefs and people of the affected communities  in a mutual and sustainable manner for a successful implementation of the project.

Expectedly, the people of Northern Ghana and the nation as a whole will enjoy the Multipurpose dam by three and a half years as estimated.
