In the process, bank branches were burnt, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) destroyed and workers’ personal effects were damaged, amid attacks on their members.
Sensing more dangers, ASSBIFI, in a statement signed by its President, Olusoji Oluwole, said it would no longer watch its members endanger their lives in the cource of offering service to the nation.
The Union noted that it had requested government to provide safety for its members within and around the banking premises, “But regrettably, the attacks have continued without any form of security for the safety of our members,” he lamented.
The statement reads in full:
The national secretariat has been inundated with reports of threats and attacks on life and property of members and bank branches.
We issued warning and appeals to government to provide security measures for the safety of life and property of our members within and around the banking premises.
But regrettably, the attacks have continued without any former of security for the safety, the recent being the attack in Epe on Friday. We cannot leave our people to be exposed to obvious danger.
Consequently, all members should today, February 17, 2023, immediately stay away from work in any state where banks have been attacked. This is to continue everyday until normalcy returned.
