Challenges That May Disrupt 2027 General Election—INEC Chairman

Challenges That May Disrupt 2027 General Election

OpenLife News reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has listed security risks, vote-buying, hate speech, and foreign interference as key threats that could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving a Pre-Election Assessment Mission, PEAM, delegation from the International Republican Institute, IRI.

Direct Threats To Voter Confidence

Leading the IRI delegation was former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Jendayi Frazier.

Amupitan warned that if not checked, the threats could erode public trust in the electoral process.

“Security risks, localised electoral violence, vote-buying, and the rapid proliferation of hate speech, disinformation, and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, FIMI, pose direct threats to voter confidence,” he said.

The meeting came three days after the Osun State off-cycle governorship election and a day before the statutory commencement of public campaigns and rallies for the 2027 elections on Wednesday, August 19.

INEC Scales Up For 2027

The INEC Chairman said the commission is already in full-scale preparation mode for 2027 and described the IRI assessment as an important independent perspective.

He disclosed that INEC plans to deploy about 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units nationwide.

On voter registration, Amupitan said the commission is using the Automated Biometric Identification System, ABIS, under the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, to remove duplicate entries and keep the National Register of Voters clean.

Technology: BVAS and IReV Recording Over 98% Success

According to Amupitan, recent off-cycle governorship and legislative by-elections have served as test runs for INEC’s logistics, security and technology.

“The performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, for dual biometric verification and the real-time public display of Polling Unit result sheets, Form EC8A, on the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal continues to demonstrate high operational reliability, achieving upload rates above 98 per cent in recent off-cycle contests,” he stated.

Roadmap: Early Deployment, Peace Accord, Anti-Corruption Drive

The INEC boss outlined the commission’s roadmap to include voter register audits, early deployment with transport unions to ensure polls open by 8:30 a.m., and better assistive devices for persons with disabilities, pregnant women and the elderly.

On security and money politics, he said INEC is working with security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES, and anti-graft bodies including the EFCC and ICPC to monitor campaign finance and prosecute electoral offenders.

Amupitan also disclosed that INEC will join presidential candidates later on Tuesday for the signing of the National Peace Committee’s Peace Accord on Issue-Based Campaigns to promote civility.

We Will Be Impartial Umpires

Reaffirming the commission’s stance, the INEC Chairman assured Nigerians and international observers of its neutrality.

“As an electoral management body, our sole mandate is to serve as an uncompromising, impartial umpire dedicated to delivering a free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive election that reflects the sovereign will of the Nigerian people,” he said.
