<h4>Bad market for prostitutes in Borno<&sol;h4>&NewLine;<p><strong><a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;openlife&period;ng&sol;">OpenLife Nigeria<&sol;a><&sol;strong> reports that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State&comma; Tuesday&comma; October 17&comma; ordered the demolition of illegal brothels and criminal dens notorious for prostitution&comma; gangsterism and other illicit activities around the Maiduguri metropolis&comma; within 72 hours&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Although it was not clear the agencies&semi; Borno Urban Development Agency or Borno Geographical Information Service&comma; to carry out the demolition&comma; he gave the directive during a visit to one of such locations at &OpenCurlyQuote;Bayan Quarters’&comma; a settlement around railway staff quarters&comma; in the metropolis&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The area harbours gangsters&comma; criminal activities and the use of minors for commercial sex activities&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The governor expressed concern over the rise in criminal activities associated with these illegal brothels and criminal dens&comma; including prostitution&comma; drug peddling&comma; and other illicit operations&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He noted that these activities not only pose a threat to the security of the state but also perpetuate social vices that undermine the well-being of communities and the dignity of the individuals involved&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Zulum explained that while the settlement&comma; which harbours criminals and minor girls for commercial sex activities&comma; will be demolished in 72 hours&comma; the illegal brothels&comma; however&comma; have 12 hours to vacate&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;The government has been duly informed of the activities that are going on here&comma; this settlement is completely illegal&period; People are killed here&comma; this place serves as a breeding space for insurgents&period; Therefore&comma; I have directed that everybody should vacate the place&comma;” Zulum said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Zulum also announced the revocation of the land title where such criminal activities were perpetuated&comma; which he said was initially approved for use by the Nigerian Railway Corporation&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I understand that this land was approved by Borno State Government to be used by the Nigerian Railway Corporation&comma; but unfortunately&comma; it’s been rented out illegally with all forms of criminal activities taking place&comma;” Zulum said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;For this reason&comma; the government has revoked the earlier approval and henceforth&comma; the land belongs to Borno State Government”&comma; he said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Meanwhile&comma; it would be noted that Prostitution in Nigeria is illegal in all Northern States that practice Islamic penal code&period; In Southern Nigeria&comma; the activities of pimps or madams&comma; underage prostitution and the operation or ownership of brothels are penalized under sections 223&comma; 224&comma; and 225 of the Nigerian Criminal Code&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>However&comma; there is the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes&comma; NANP&comma; a professional organization based in Nigeria to assist adult sex workers&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The organization was formed out of opposition to the country&&num;8217&semi;s prostitution laws which criminalize sex work and all of its related activities&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>NANP campaigns for equal access to healthcare&comma; a safe work environment and protection from abuse and exploitation&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;punchng&period;com&sol;">It is headed by a president who is elected by association members every 12 months&period; As of August 2015&comma; the president of NANP was Jessica Elvis&period;<&sol;a><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>She held the post until her death from a heart-related disease on 25 October 2015&period;<br &sol;>&NewLine;The current president and secretary general are Tamar Tion and Sandra Efosa respectively&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;
