ASUU strike which begins soon has been described as a foremost sign of failure on the part of government
OpenLife Nigeria reports that aggregation of opinion from public affairs analysts, arising from the proposed industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities., ASUU, which begins in two weeks time.
Speaking on a television programme on Tuesday, January 5, Ayo Opadokun, SAN, opined that all available indexes are clear indication that Nigeria is becoming a failed state.
The Human Rights activists noted that the current structure of the Nigerian system does not provoke healthy competition for growth amongst regions and states as obtained in the first republic.
“Regions were growing economically during the first republic until the military came and introduced a federal structure that made the federal government too powerful,” he stated.
The prominent activist of the National Democratic Coalition, (NADECO days stressed further that the centralized system of government has to be reviewed to engineer the desired growth adding that the consequence of delay will be too harsh to bear.
“Federal government is acting as father Christmas through its monthly allocation for resources that should ordinarily be under the control and disbursement of state government. That is the reason education is failing, health is nothing to write home about,” he emphasized.
He however reckoned that there are flashes of efforts on the part of government but such efforts, he stated, are like mere drop in the ocean.
ASUU had in March begun a nationwide strike over the federal government’s insistence that lecturers must register for the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and other key issues.
However, after months of disagreements, Ogunyemi said the government and ASUU have finally reached an agreement which led to the suspension of the strike.
But at the moment, the union may resume strike in February if federal government fails to redeem itsl promise, says union president.
