APM To FBI: Release Tinubu’s Drug Records, He Shouldn’t Be On 2027 Ballot With Tainted Integrity

OpenLife News reports that the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, has called on the United States government to make public findings in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, records linked to President Bola Tinubu, saying he should not be on the 2027 ballot with “alleged tainted integrity.”

The party said Nigerians deserve to elect leaders with clean records ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Release What Won’t Endanger Lives

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, APM urged US authorities to release portions of the FBI report that will not compromise the safety of witnesses, investigators or law enforcement techniques.

“The APM urges the United States authorities to make public the findings in the report of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the drug-trafficking records allegedly linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Yusuf said.

“The US authorities can release aspects of the report that will not endanger lives, expose witnesses, investigators or techniques used in the investigation.”

APM Alleges Cover-Up

The party accused the Tinubu Presidency of blocking the release of the records, saying the move was fuelling suspicion.

“Our party asserts that the sustained efforts by the Tinubu Presidency to block the release of the report to the public heighten suspicion of guilt and desperation for a cover-up,” Yusuf stated.

The controversy centres on FBI records from the early 1990s sought by American transparency activist, Aaron Greenspan, through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The matter is linked to a 1993 US civil forfeiture proceeding involving $460,000 in funds associated with Tinubu.

The FBI has argued that disclosure could endanger individuals or reveal sensitive methods. Tinubu’s legal team has also asked a US court to block the release, citing privacy protections.

Harming Nigeria’s Reputation

APM said the issue had resurfaced because Tinubu is seeking a second term in 2027.

“The drug and other ancillary allegations against President Tinubu, who is a major contender in the 2027 presidential election, constitute a global issue which continues to harm Nigeria’s reputation among the comity of nations,” Yusuf said.

The party noted that the Presidential Election Petition Court in 2023 held that petitioners failed to prove Tinubu had a criminal conviction in the US, describing the forfeiture as civil and not criminal.

APM said the US, as a leading democracy, should help consolidate transparency in the fight against drug trafficking and corruption.

Similar Call By Atiku

The position mirrors a recent call by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ADC presidential candidate, who urged the FBI to release any legally disclosable information on Tinubu.

Atiku argued that protecting sources should not be used to withhold information Nigerians have a right to know ahead of 2027.

APM concluded that withholding the records could affect Nigeria’s “security, national integrity and democratic growth” and urged the US to help Nigerians elect a leader “with clean records and not an individual encumbered by drug-related allegations and corruption cases.”
