Almost 3 Years After Mohbad’s Death
OpenLife News reports that Nigerian singer and songwriter Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 in Lagos, Nigeria.
Mohbad was a Nigerian singer, songwriter and former Marlian Music signee. He blew up with hits like “KPK / Ko Por Ke”, “Feel Good” and “Beast & Peace”. Fans called him “Imole” meaning light.
He left Naira Marley’s Marlian Records in 2022 and went independent. That period was filled with public allegations of bullying, assault, and unpaid royalties.
The exact cause of Mohbad’s death was not immediately announced.
Reports said he was treated at home by a nurse after complaining of ear infection and body aches.
He was buried within 24 hours in Ikorodu, in line with Yoruba custom. That quick burial sparked outrage.
Nigerians trooped to the streets in Lagos, Abuja, London, and other cities with #JusticeForMohbad.
Candlelight processions, protests, and social media campaigns demanded an autopsy and investigation.
The Lagos State Government exhumed his body on September 21, 2023 for an autopsy. The police set up a 15-man special investigation team.
Several people were questioned including: Naira Marley, Sam Larry, Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi .
Autopsy Results
In April 2024, the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Center said the autopsy was inconclusive. The pathologist stated that decomposition made it impossible to determine the exact cause of death, but there was a possibility of drug reaction.
Coroner’s Inquest
A coroner’s inquest was held at Ikorodu Magistrate Court through 2023 and 2024.
Witnesses including Mohbad’s father, wife, friends, and medical personnel testified. The court was looking to determine cause of death and who, if anyone, was culpable.
