OpenLife Nigeria reports that the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, was today (Tuesday) granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
Godwin Emefiele, was taken into custody by Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service (SSS), on June 10, hours after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is now in its custody for some investigative reasons,” Peter Afunanya, the spokesperson for the agency, said in a press statement.
After weeks of legal rigmarole, Emefiele was granted bail in the sum of N20 million and a surety in like sum.
The bail followed a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearm brought against him by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, had applied for his bail after his client pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Daudu contended that the offence for which Emefiele was changed is bailable.
Emefiele was brought to court at 9.23a.m. in a white Hillux pick-up van, with the number plates covered.
On arrival at the court, Emefiele stepped down from the van assisted by a female, whose identity could not be confirmed at press time.
He was then taken to the courtroom of Justice Nicolas Oweibo, trial judge in the matter.
