Governor Oborevwori Suspends Commissioner
OpenLife News reports that governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has placed its Commissioner for Works, Highways and Urban Roads, Hon. Izeze Rume Yakubu Reuben, on indefinite suspension following allegations that he assaulted the Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Mr. Simon Mudi popularly known as “Temple.”
The suspension, announced Monday in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, takes effect immediately to allow for what the government called an “unbiased investigation” by security agencies.
in July 2026, Simon Mudi was brutally attacked with bottles and chairs during a Delta Central All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, near Warri.
The exact cause of the violence remains a subject of differing accounts and investigations.
However, the most widely circulated claim on social media suggests that Mudi, a protocol aide to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, addressed the gathering and praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, allegedly calling it “the best thing to happen to Nigerians.”
This remark reportedly infuriated a group of youths at the venue, sparking the chaos.
In the statement, the SSG said the decision was taken in line with the state government’s commitment to public safety, law and order.
“The State Government remains committed to the maintenance of public safety in all circumstances which guarantees law and order and the sanctity of lives. This position is upheld even when institutions of state are involved,” Dr. Emu stated.
He added that the suspension will enable security agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent probe into the allegations without interference.
Hon. Izeze oversees highways and urban roads, one of the most visible and budget-heavy ministries in the state.
With the 2025 budget implementation and ongoing road projects across the 3 senatorial districts, his absence may slow approvals and site inspections.
The SSG did not announce an acting Commissioner.
Sources say a Permanent Secretary may oversee the ministry pending the outcome of investigations.
Hon. Izeze, a former lawmaker and two-time Commissioner, is considered a key political figure in Delta Central. His political future may now depend on what security agencies find.
For now, the Commissioner remains suspended indefinitely, and all eyes are on the outcome of the police investigation.
