Zenith Bank’s Market Capitalisation Grows
OpenLife News reports that in December 2025, Zenith Bank Plc was worth N2.54 trillion on the Nigerian Exchange. By June 2026, it had crossed N5.07 trillion.
In just six months, Nigeria’s largest lender by profit doubled its market value and became the first Nigerian bank to enter the N5 trillion club.

The rally was not an accident. It was the product of CBN recapitalisation rules, record earnings, and a market that suddenly decided Nigerian banks were the best place to put money.
The Starting Point: N2.54 Trillion In December 2025
At the end of 2025, Zenith closed the year with a market capitalisation of N2.54 trillion. It was already a Tier-1 bank, but investor sentiment was cautious.
The Naira had been volatile, loan growth was slow, and many investors awaited how banks would cope with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new recapitalisation requirements. The CBN had given banks until March 2026 to meet higher minimum capital thresholds.
For many, that meant raising fresh equity, merging, or downsizing. The uncertainty kept bank stocks cheap.
The Catalyst: CBN Reforms Re-Rate The Sector
From January 2026, three CBN policies changed the game. First was the recapitalisation drive.
This policy, rather than weakened the banks, necessitated the need to clean up balance sheets, raise capital and signal strength to the market. In the estimation of investors, “Only the strong will survive.”

However, Zenith Bank, with strong capital buffers already, was good to go, given the confidence it enjoys in the industrial and enterprise spaces.
Second was FX stability. After the “N float” in 2023, the Naira began to stabilise in late 2025. Banks with large dollar-denominated assets and trade finance books, like Zenith, booked significant revaluation gains in 2024 and 2025. Those gains flowed straight into profits.
Third was tight monetary policy in which case high interest rates meant banks earned more on government securities and loans.
History of Trillion-Naira Profits
Unarguably, Zenith Bank Plc became the first Nigerian bank to post a trillion-naira profit with 2024 Profit After Tax of N1.033 trillion, representing +52.59% YoY.
This N1.04trn PAT made Zenith Nigeria’s most profitable company, not just bank. It also triggered the stock rally that took market cap from N2.54trn in Dec 2025 to over N5tn by April 2026.

Interestingly, Zenith has announced plans for a London Stock Exchange listing by 2027. That signaled ambition to raise cheaper dollar capital and expand internationally. The bank has also grown across Africa and in the UK and France.
In a market starved of quality growth stories, Zenith looked like the closest thing to a “blue chip,” validating 35 years of building a corporate and retail franchise that can deliver profit at scale.
Founded by a Nigerian businessman, Dr. Jim Ovia in May 1990, the bank started operations in July 1990 with initial capital of ₦20 million (approximately $4–$5 million at the time).

Since then, Zenith Bank has continued to deliver strong financial results while accelerating investments in technology, artificial intelligence, and digital banking solutions.
In the 2025 financial year, the Bank grew gross earnings by six per cent year on year to ₦4.19 trillion and delivered profit after tax of ₦1.04 trillion, while reducing its non-performing loan ratio from 4.7 per cent to 3.8 per cent.
In keeping with its dividend policy, Zenith Bank rewarded its investors with a record-breaking total dividend of N10.00 per share (totaling N410.69 billion) for the 2025 financial year. This represents a 100% increase over N5.00 per share paid in 2024.

The Bank has also deepened its pan-African presence and expanded trade and transaction banking capabilities to connect businesses across key markets.
The Bank’s track record of excellent performance has therefore, continued to earn the brand numerous awards, including being recognised as the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital for the seventeenth consecutive year in the 2026 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking, published by The Banker and “Nigeria’s Best Bank” at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2025.
The Bank was also awarded Bank of the Year (Nigeria) in The Banker’s Bank of the Year Awards for 2020, 2022, and 2024; Best Bank in Nigeria from 2020 to 2022, 2024 and 2025, in the Global Finance World’s Best Banks Awards; Best Bank for Digital Solutions in Nigeria in the Euromoney Awards 2023; and was listed in the World Finance Top 100 Global Companies in 2023.
Further recognitions include Best Commercial Bank, Nigeria for six consecutive years from 2021 to 2026 in the World Finance Banking Awards and Most Sustainable Bank, Nigeria in the International Banker 2023, 2024 and 2026 Banking Awards.

The Bank’s commitment to excellence led to Zenith being also named the Most Valuable Banking Brand in Nigeria in The Banker’s Top 500 Banking Brands for 2020 and 2021, Bank of the Year 2023 to 2025 at the BusinessDay Banks and Other Financial Institutions (BAFI) Awards, and Retail Bank of the Year for three consecutive years from 2020 to 2022 and 2024 to 2025.
