Described as an emerging 21st century citadel of learning in terms of learning, teaching and research and the oldest university in Ogun State, second oldest in the Southwest and sixth oldest in the entire country, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye recently showcased the opposite of what it claims to be at its 32nd And 33rd Convocation ceremonies which held on January 29, 2024.

Before then, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, on January 24, at a press conference at the conference room of the Senate building of the university, said that a total number of 11,896 would be graduating during the 32nd and 33rd convocations of the university scheduled for January 29 out of which 174 made First Class while 112 will be awarded various Doctorate Degrees.

The Professor further said that the convocations cover two academic sessions of 2021/2022 as well as 2022/2023.

However, the convocations was said to have held without document listing the names of the graduating students, thereby denying attendees a vital information.

Lamenting about the development, Olugbenga Osinaike, Publisher, Church Times Agency and former Assistant Editor , Punch Newspaper asked if the university is that poor that it can’t afford to print at least a brochure with the list of all graduating students as it is done in many campuses.

Osinaike who expressed his sadness on his Facebook wall wrote:
Olabisi Onabanjo University why? This is the first convocation ceremony I would attend without a document to show I was there.

The university collected N60k from every student as clearance towards the event.

It is just normal that there will be a printed document showing the list of all graduating students. But that was not the case.

I was really curious and called a friend of mine who lectures there to ask if there is a brochure or at least a pamphlet that gives us a clue of the event and some other useful information .

He said he was not sure the university would give out such document free.
Whether free or for sale by the time we left the convocation ground there was no document to show anything happened.

Most of the guests sat under the canopy outside the OGD hall where the event took place but the transmitting device was epileptic all through.

Is the university that poor that it can’t afford to print at least a brochure with the list of all graduating students as it is done in many campuses?

Guests and parents of graduating students who attended the event lost on two ends.
No booklet to go home with, no feel of the real event because of the erratic transmission ….it’s really appalling.

However, attempts by OpenLife to get clarifications from the school authorities through a phone call to a number on its website proved abortive.

A mail sent to the school’s official email has not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.
