OpenLife Nigeria reports that over time, some of the major challenges associated with the Nigerian Ports Authority are hhigh import duty, corruption and bureaucratic bottlenecks.
Business analysts have always identified these factors factors as responsible for the high cost of doing business at Nigerian ports by way of increasing the amount of money importers spend on taking delivery of their consignments out of the port.
Among those who are worried is Ms Arunma Oteh, a Nigerian cum British nationality who once held sway as Director General, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission and was then described as the “Iron Lady” of the Commission as a result of her no-nonsense approach to the job of policing Nigeria’s financial business world.
Reacting to the excruciating process of clearing containers in Nigerian ports, the Computer Science First Class Honour graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Scholar, University of Oxford who is also a former Treasurer World Bank, asked rhetorically “Is this true? If so, then this is a major opportunity to fix business environment with serious port reforms.
The Harvard Business School Masters Degree holder in Business Administration enumerated the port clearing processes saying “To clear a single container at Nigeria seaport, you have to go through over 20 custom units.
